Broken Passenger Window

So someone broke my passenger window last night while I was at the gym. Smashed it, went through the glove compartment, and stole my portable GPS and about .75 cent from the change tray. I walked around the parking lot after the incident and saw a red Carrera S and a Cayman S also parked but they were left untouched.

So here's where it gets interesting... I called about 4 different places to get a quote.

Shop#1 -- I called Safe Lite glass as recommended by a friend and they were more interested in getting my insurance info then helping me. Even after telling them I would be paying out of pocket since I did not expect the cost to exceed my deductible (not by too much anyways). Some lady called me back and said "your car is such an exotic that I have to order the window from California and will take 2 weeks plus". I said forget it. Didn't even get a quote.

Shop#2 -- Porsche dealer1. Lady picks up at service department and explains "the window is sooo specific I need a vin#, no one can get the part but us, and I estimate it will be about $775 plus $75 for overnight shipping for the part". I replied "no thanks bye".

Shop#3 -- Porsche dealer2 (that I purchased my car from). $650 including labor, part, and a loaner car. I said done deal and they ordered the part for me without a blink of an eye, no deposit, nothing. They even called the tint guys to coordinate retinting my window after its been installed. Sweet. Even though I probably will overpay by about $200 here, it was the best option at this point.

Shop#4 -- Porsche dealer3. keeps putting me on hold for 15 min, drop calls once, and just straight answer machine all morning. never returned my call left on voice mail. Didn't know it was that difficult giving business.

VIN #... its not THAT specific of a window. Granted, with the VIN the dealer can make sure its exactly the right type of window glass for that car, rather than having to ask model, year, etc... But, the glass is just window glass and should be able to brought in from a glass supplier next day ... 2 wks, what was safelite smokin? you could get it flown in FedEx from Stuttgart faster than that.

what bugs me is that 4 different places had such a different price quote for such a simple repair. where are these people getting their prices? do they really just make it up as they go along? its a bit frustrating and upsetting. Same issue when I had to replace a set of tires on my GL450. The SAME tire from 3 different dealers range from $212 to $310. WTF!

My only guess is that the clueless responses point to a region where Porsche window breaks are uncommon . That's actually a good thing .

I hate an effing thief almost as much as I hate an effing liar.. maybe more.

I'd pay to see one of the sumbich's hands lopped off. I doubt he'd do it again.
