Its an interesting recommendation but I am not sure how much merit it really has. Changing the size of the filter will not change the amount of oil being filtered, its all being filtered, only the amount in the filter housing at any one time. Or simply put, getting a bigger filter simply increases the surface area of the filtering unit. Another thing to consider is that the stock filtering element is very small and it only appears large due to the large size of the screw on filter housing. I am honestly not that smart on this but I am not sure how increasing the size of the filter housing has any effect on the effectiveness of the filter. I can see race engines/hard used engines benefitting from a large filter due to the amount of bits getting picked up and at some point the filtering elements ability to pass oil is degraded. Not sure a daily driven or even occasionally tracked car would benefit.

Either way, its an interesting question and LN is probably a good place to go for answers.

Part Number: 1042
UPC Number: 765809135789
Principal Application: Various GM Cars & Trucks (75-76) (96-10)
All Applications
Style: Spin-On Lube Filter
Service: Lube
Type: Full Flow
Media: Paper
Height: 3.404
Outer Diameter Top: 2.921
Outer Diameter Bottom: Closed
Thread Size: 13/16-16
By-Pass Valve Setting-PSI: None
Anti-Drain Back Valve: Yes
Burst Pressure-PSI: 320
Max Flow Rate: 9-11 GPM
Nominal Micron Rating: 21

This is compared to the factory filter insert which is rated at 28 microns. We also use a Napa Gold 1081, which has the same 21 micron rating and a burst strength of 200 psi in accusump installs to preserve ground clearance, which even with half the filter area, still flows plenty.

Both the 1081 and 1042 do not have bypasses, so make the conversion a true full flow, unlike the factory arrangement which has a fairly low bypass pressure.

I personally run the 1042 on my wife's '10 DFI Cayman S and the 1081 on my '99 Boxster w/ 3.4, both in track use. Although there are K&N and Mobil 1 filters that cross, my preference is the Napa Gold.

Hey Charles, thanks for dropping in! I feel much better after reading your detailed post. I wasn't trying to create any drama or question your expertise in any way, I was simply passing along an observation made by my mechanic. I think we can all rest easy with the installation of the Napa 1042.

Thanks again for your time, take care!

I especially liked the electrical tape to cushion the lug wrench...

Just ordered my kit from LN. Nearest dealership is 90 miles and I don't trust any of the jake legs in my area to touch the vehicle, much less change the oil. Great write up.

I ran 15w-50, its not Porsche approved but there are many owners that have used it for years with no issues. In a warmer climate... like not below zero... you will have no problems.

The Castrol oil I used is Porsche approved and much better than the similar Mobil of that weight.

not sure if it is a BS but i was just changing oil, got LN adap[ter on with NAPA filter, got 7 qt of oil in with 1 bottle of STP ZDDP additive, all together it is less than 8qt of liquid and my oil level ssensor shows that I am full, all bars lit.
very odd. it should fit almost 9 qt of oil in 3.6 m96 engine from what I know. WTF?
sensor is working, it was showing me level decreasing before oil change. not sure whom to trust - operation manual or sensor.

Sounds about right. There will be "trapped oil" like JEllis originally mentioned in his first post.

my bad, just checked workshop manual, it says oil change amount with no filter - 8.25 litres, with filter - 8 litres. i guess 7qt of oil plus stp bottle should be about right then...

Yep 8qts is usually the max I can get in and like I said, I usually over fill every time. I am going to switch to putting in the first 7qts and then going slow after.

dumb question re oil change light

Sorry for this dumb question, but is there an oil change indicator light that has to be reset when you change the oil and if so is there an easy way to do that without going to the dealer?

there is a light on a dashboard, actually a message saying - service due, or something.
you have to go to someone who has PIWIS to reset it. or may be durametric software can do it too, not sure.

I just aquired an 05 C2S Launch Edition. I'm currently not set up to change oil at my place (home construction), but would like to know if there are any places in San Diego to borrow a lift/garage bay? I'm in the process of ordering the materials for a do it yourself oil change - don't trust the dealer nor have I found an Independent I can trust. Anyone due for an oil change? I'll purchase the oil (Mobile 1 or Motul) or doughnuts if anyone can spare the place =P
