Hello all. I am new to the Porsche World and wanted to introduce myself. I currently own a 2006 BMW E90 330i Msport and was looking to get a 997 next. I have always been into performance cars but my knowledge is mostly from building turbo Hondas, Supras, 300zx's, Mustangs etc.
Here is my question. I work at a BMW Service Dept. and recently i took in a customer of mine's pristine 2005 Carrera base model with an original 10,000 miles. The car is Silver/Black 6speed with the 19" sport wheels, chrono package, clear front bumper side lenses but otherwise all stock. He told me he was interested in selling it and i am interested in buying it. What do you guys think is a good price? The car is absolutely MINT and has no paintwork and has been coming to my dealer since day one for State Inspections annually.
What i need to know is an unbiased opinion. I have heard many horror stories about the breakdown cost of Porsches but many have also told me it is not much worse and in some cases better than BMW's. I am a mechanic (although not by trade anymore)and have several friends that work in Porsche dealers who can get me parts at employee prices. So what do you guys think?

I'm probably wrong, but I'd say around 40-50k? As with any luxury car, the prices for services are pretty expensive.....but that's the price of having an amazing car

Any particular reason why you ruled out the 05 model?

 

Some people are concerned with potential IMS issues with early 05's that could led to serious engine issues, including replacement.

The car is worth no more than 42K. No matter what the condition.

 

Based on my current hunt, I would not pay more than 38-40K. While the low miles are a nice benefit, your mechanical skills and access to parts should give you freedom to look at some with higher mileage in effort to get a better deal. Moreover, 05 with that few miles might increase probability of IMS/RMS (from what some say).

There is a red one with 40K miles in FL for 38K (same options). There is one in DFW same color for about 37K (no sport chrono). Lots to be had for base 05 below 40K from my recent search...especially from private seller.

 

Wow thank you for that info. I will definitely do a search to find out more info on this matter. I wonder if that problem is vin# or production date specific? If he is willing to take 42k for it i would take it. The only thing i dont like about it is that it isnt a "s" model? Does it make that much of a difference?

When you finally find the 911 you're looking for at a price that is reasonable, you'll soon discover that Porsche is a different animal compared to anything else that you have owned before, and I mean that in the most positive light that I can put on it. The overall style and design, the mechanical innovations, the driver involvement, the aural and mechanical song at speed, plus a number of other sensual involvements that are hard to quantify, will provide you with the most enjoyable driving experience available from a mass-produced machine. I dare say that it will spoil you for any other make, other than maybe (maybe) an ultra-exotic like a Ferrari or Lamborghini (frankly, if I was looking at those, I'd look at moving up the Porsche food chain first). Anyway, good luck with the hunt and let us know when you've "bagged" your target.
