Excellence Magazine - Northern California Test Route?

Okay - I get that they call it "Secret" for a reason, but does anyone have a clue about the Excellence Magazine "Secret Test Route" that's apparently North of San Francisco? It sounds awfully appealing.

Or, for that Matter, does anyone have a good back road drive recommendation on the Peninsula / South Bay?

Thanks in advance,

JD

NorCal Backroads

Skyline Blvd (Hwy 35) is a spectacular drive. Follows the spine of the ridge separating the bay from the Pacific, through redwood forests, lots of twisties. Stop at Alice's Restaurant in Skylonda or head into Woodside for breakfast.

From the northern Peninsula, head west on Hwy 92. From southern Peninsula, drive west on Hwy 17.

Any particular stretches that are devoid of the hordes of cyclists who are always out on the weekend? Don't mind sharing the road, but I'm always astonished at how many bicycles are careening around the twisties.

Can't help you there - I'm afraid cyclists are after the same thrills we are (I raced for 20 years, understand both perspectives). Best bet is probably to go late afternoon to avoid the morning group rides - by then most two-wheelers are sleeping off their morning workout.

I've also found that later in the afternoon is better for avoiding cyclists as well.
I try and be courteous and just hang back until a good place to pass presents itself but sometimes you'll get a pack of people who refuse to drop into single file and that's frustrating. Sometimes I feel like they see a porsche and feel like it's their duty to police the road and not give the opportunity to pass.

Thanks for the info.

Skyline looks great - just a little crowded. I found the road that takes you to Pescadero (I think it's called, cleverly, Pescadero Road) last Saturday, and that was pretty great. How heavily does 5-0 patrol Skyline?

And, about the bikes, is it me or are they acting a little entitled in the South Bay? I used to be an avid rider, and I never remember acting like that!

Can't say how heavily Skyline is patrolled these days - I'm unfortunately no longer living in NorCal. Hopefully some other local board members can chime in. Good argument for a V-1 or Escort (etc)!

Entitlement seems to be these days a way of life for many people in the Bay Area.
