Flat Paint Colors
Flat Paint Colors
Anyone have any photos of flat black P car. I have seen a flat grey looked pretty sharp. My son really likes the flat black and is trying to talk me into it.
I am deciding on a color before i order my next P car. I have a 2009 C2S cabrio in Aqua blue and love the color. I was thinking of gatting a TT in the same color until i started thinking about the flats.

hey richard,
sorry to say that i don't believe porsche offers flat colors unless the changed the policy in the past month. see this recent article on bloomberg and excerpt:

"Not all manufacturers of high-performance cars are fans of flat colors. Porsche SE, the maker of the 911 sports car, doesn’t offer dull finishes because of concerns about the paint’s durability. “The quality of matte finishes available does not yet satisfy the standards we have at Porsche,” spokesman Hermann- Josef Stappen said, explaining that flat paints haven’t been fully developed yet and can be damaged by car-wash brushes.
For what it's worth, I love my Black Porsche, but as a fellow NYorker, I have to say it's very tough to keep it looking clean in the city.

I'd buy one in whatever color you want, then I'd have Xpel cover it in their matt vinyl film. That way, when the flat/matte color craze dies, you simply peel off the film, and you have an undamaged paint job.
On the Porsche web site you can build your car. When you choose paint color there is an option for flat paint. it's aroung $4500.
I think the black looks sinister, but might be a trend.

Mercedes has been offering some of their AMG machines with flat finishes. I inquired about one of them and the salesman told me it's actually just the clearcoat that's flat, the paint is the same. I asked him if it was any more durable than a traditional gloss finish and he told me "no" and then even added that in some cases it's also more fragile. He also added that if the car should be in an accident matching the flat could prove rather difficult as well. The whole car will likely need to be re-sprayed with the flat clear to acheive satisfactory results.
Also, you can't really wax a flat finish, at least not with traditional products anyway and you definitely cannot polish it. If you get any kind of light scratches you have to "live" with it. You cannot use any kind of compound regardless of how mild it claims to be because any kind of abrasive will polish the flat and you'll end up with shiney spots.
NC997 has given you excellent advice. Go with a wrap which can be removed at a later date. I also believe the whole "flat craze" will pass once more people realize how difficult these finishes are maintain.

Seems like the latest fashion accessory to me.
Maybe it will survive 2011. Maybe not.
A bit like that flippy paint from a few years ago or big-fleck candy colors before that.
Or maybe I'm wrong.
If you must, a film/wrap would be the only way to go IMHO.
But even that is difficult to maintain, from what I've read.
