Opinions of negotiations?
So I am negotiating a C2. I pay to have a pre purchase inspection after he and I have agreed on a price we both like. I told him I would buy it pending the inspection. The car passes with flying colors. I tell him I can paypal him a deposit, have a friend bring it buy, etc. I can even have the friend pay for the car until I can get up there on Monday.
He says a guy wanted to come by and look this weekend. He will call and cancel that guy if I want it. This guy says if he likes the car he'll give him asking price...$1600 more. Seller sends me an email trying to talk me up $1000. If I don't want to pay more, he'll refund my $175 inspection....
Is it just me or is that dirty? I sent him a message that I will take the car at the agreed price and I think he negotiated in bad faith. I still want the car, but I will not go up one penny just on principle.
This is my first P-car. Please tell me others don't pull this bull.

never 'paypal'. never give 'deposits'.
a payment for used car should be made in a cashiers check, in the presence of a notary after you both sign purchase agreement and notary certifies it.
anything else is bogus, there are many cars around there and any schemers can go and find another sucker.
tell seller he can go and find whoever he wants, and what you now will pay $3K less than you originally offered. greedy bastards should get punished. good luck to him selling 997 car right now in the middle of the winter.
and do not pay for inspection with your own money. offer to subtract this amount from purchase price, but do not pay your own cash for anything you do not own, nevermind what it is.

No, no and no.
Bait and switch is as old as it get's. I would politely tell them good luck and thanks for your time. He will probably call you back saying the other buyer backed out. At that point the gig is up and I would not want to give him/her my business.
Not saying this is in fact the case but I would think twice in any event.

Dear Recalcitrant -
I am very excited for you to own a 997, and your excitement must be off the charts -- I completely understand that. You should be on cloud 9 just before your first Porsche purchase.
But please do not let your excitement cloud your judgement. I've been following and contributing to your posts and I believe you know deep down that this car and this dealer and this deal are not going to end favorably for you.
Don't beat yourself up for falling for the high pressure sales tactics that you've experienced. It's happened to many of us now seasoned buyers. Step away for a moment, reflect, and recognize you are being taken as a sucker. I say this with all due respect -- believe it or not.
Just walk away - now.

Is this a used-dealer or private seller? Either way...definitely not kosher. But, the transaction isn't really binding in practical terms. (No comment on reneg /legal terms.)
I'd play it cool and stand firm. There are plenty of 911's out there. (Also, this other "potential buyer" might not have cash lined up in time...or could even be ficticious.) You don't need to get into a bidding war or get manipulated by the seller.
If he refuses to sell it for the previously agreed upon price, try to get your PPI cash back and walk away.

This is all great advice. It's hard to let go when you find a car you really like...I know from experience. I hope to be buying a first Porsche next year and I will take all of these good comments to heart....and remember to think with my head.
Good luck on another car - it'll be worth the wait.

I would walk away, I had silimar situation at the used car dealer where he changed price on the car while I was in the dealership but I had the browser still up on my smartphone to show him what he had it listed for. I told him keep the car and I walked out..I ended up with much better car later on
Get your $175 back right away... See if the car is sold after the weekend. If not, then tell the sales guy, that you are not sure but you might still be interested and you can get the money together - oh by the way, now you only have whatever your offer was this week minus $750 because you spent it on Christmas shopping. Tell him you are not done and still have few more gifts to buy. You are actually on your way to the mall and he needs to hurry up and accept your offer!
You have the upper hand in this.

You guys are awesome! It's a 2005 S from a private seller for $40K. A really good price a on loaded S from what I've found. I talked on the phone with him this morning. He said if the guy didn't buy it, I could still have it for 40. You guys don't know me, but I wore him out. I told him if he didn't want to honor the agreement today, I don't want the car. He should call me back and let me know. I will walk in a heartbeat over $100 more just on principle. I'll find another one just like it. Oh, BTW, he will give me my money back or I'll take a trip to Portland and pick it up personally!

I counted no fewer than 6 nice looking 2005 997S's on cars.com for between $39K - $43K asking price. You have options!!
Curious -- what are the top 3 attributes about this specific car that you value? Price excluded since there's no lack of '05s in the $40's.
Hey Taylor. My max I've set is 40. No higher. I have to put a limit on myself. You all probably get that part. If I couldn't find an S, I was willing to find a really great C2. I am getting this one for 40. Silver (not important, just no red), Black leather(leather important), 6 speed, 44,000miles, Nav, electric seats (not a big deal), heated seats (don't care), K40 integrated radar detector and laser diffuser (mmmm laser. sarcasm) and looks great. I was not set on this one. I had another lined up if this guy backed out.
BTW, he came to his senses. Going to pick it up tomorrow. I'll put some pics up when I get back. Driving it back down the West coast to TX! Talk to you guys in 2 days!
