Nod / Wave?
Jeep guys do it. Corvette guys do it. Porsche guys do it. Mustang guys do it. BMW guys do it. Motorcycles riders do it.
It's pretty common among many, many models and is certainly nothing of any great importance. So a person with the same type of car doesn't wave at you? Oh well...

I used to do it when I was driving with the top down or in a hard top with the windows open. Now I have a coupe with A/C and I consider waving an exercise in futility. Instead, I usually flash (or double flash) my headlights. Sadly, I rarely get a response.
What to do if you have a coupe with the windows up?

It's not that Porsches are a dime a dozen. It's that there are more and more being bought for show or image and not by car enthusiasts. Therefore, fewer and fewer respond to a wave. Look for a an older guy driving a Porsche - he will respond.
I wave at all sorts of sports cars
Not just Porsches. I'm basically just a car nut. Of course this seems to get mixed results with most older people shooting the wave back. I don't take it personally. As Adidas said many people are now buying these cars for reasons other than their sporting roots. I have to admit it was part of why I bought the car. Its great to have sports car that also makes a really nice GT.
When I was riding motorcycles I always waved and got waves back 90 percent of the time. I rode Ducati's which seemed to be well received with both the sport bikers and the cruiser set
I can tell you when I had my 66 corvette convertible I got waves from everyone. It was universally loved. I'm not sure why it got so much more love than my other cars have.

I've owned several Corvettes prior to buying the 911 last March. The wave was always strong among vette drivers. I carry on the tradition now with the Porsche and for the most part only wave at other 911's as they seem to be the only ones that wave back. Assume the Boxsters (and other models) are waving at their 'like' models as well...if they're really into their cars.
About half the time I get a wave back from fellow 911 owners (especially PCA members and 996TT owners). Same is true for Cayman, Ferrari, Lambo and AM owners. I have stopped giving the wave to boxster owners after one gave me the finger (p-car envy?).
Caymans and Boxster S are cool. Especially on the track, where they school 911s.
I wave. Not to Cayenne or Panameras.. Not because I don't like them, but the people that drive them NEVER wave back!!!

Further to adias' point about car enthusiasts - come to think of it - I'm batting 1.000 with waves back from 356 and early 911 drivers.
Tough question .
I feel it's a nice courtesy to praise another's Porsche with a simple nod but as the Op states --not everyone replies or cares . In fact I just thought it was the nature of South Florida where it seems like many are either consumed in their daily activities Or just so self serving that the only thing that counts has to be about them.
I remain optimistic though and still feel that "25 percent" is still that much more than zero.
