Nod / Wave?
Nod / Wave?
How many of you do this when you see a Porsche driving the other direction...or the same direction, for that matter?
It's almost reflex for me, although a selective reflex. I never do it when I see a Cayenne, but Boxters, Caymans (Caymen?), and the Panamera all get a small greeting. No offense to the Cayenne drivers, it just doesn't trigger the reflex.
After just putting on 1k miles in a great roadtrip up and down the California coast, my Fiancee and I noticed a couple of things. First, only about 25% of Porsche drivers respond. Of those, almost all are more mature (for lack of a better euphamism to describe people over a certain age), and only about half are prepared and probably would have waved first. Second, not a single woman waved back.
I think this is kind of a cool old sportscar driver tradition to acknowledge bretheren, but it seems like it's a dying tradition.

Yeah, I find the same ratio. Much less than half. Sad. But I'm wondering if they are oblivious. I still find it odd that people don't see me flash my lights when warning folks of a speed trap. How can you not pick up on that???
I remember Harley days when about 90% respond to the finger wave.

I always nod or give thumbs up when I see/make eye contact with another pcar driver on the road. I did the same when when I had my M3 to other BMW drivers

Perhaps they don't see you because that woman is busy texting (saw it this morning on the way to work - chick driving a Boxter looking down at her right hand with her phone in it, her other hand had a coffee, while holding the wheel with 1 finger).
i do not have grey hair but I usually wave to 911 cars I see, and do try to wave back if I have enough time.
Hahaha!
Similar post a 4-5 years ago on another forum. Conclusion was that years ago this camaraderie ( flash your lights or wave ) was pretty universal but now that Porsches are a dime a dozen
most of the new guys don't even know the tradition. As a gray hair, I quit doing it when I realized that all too often I was flashing Mazdas!

I always wave to the other P-cars. 50% wave back. Other 50% are oblivious they are even on a road. Sold my 03 Cobra about 3 weeks ago. Mustang guys are much more like motorcycles. Everybody waved. I'll continue to help the community get to that standard!
Having owned a Jeep that I took off road all over the US, I am familiar with "the wave" quite common for CJ, YJ, TJ etc to acknowledge each other. With other forms of Jeep like Cherokee not so much. Being old these conventions are known to me. In terms of Porsche seems like fewer people bother. In my neck of the woods I would attribute some of the reluctance to snobbery. In fact more non-Porsche drivers give me a thumbs up than Porsche owners wave. Most of the time I am going too fast to see anyone waving, lol.
