Temperature Readings
Dash versus OBDII
I gleaned a relevant paragraph from the Hartech document.
"Having absorbed all this there is one question we would expect the more observant of you to raise – that your car running temperature is not as high as the figures our test showed – but this is unfortunately because – according to all our tests and fully checked out temperature gauges etc – the dashboard temperature dial reads a lower temperature than is actually measured inside the engine (by 6 to 8 deg C) and is actually showing nearer to the temperature the coolant leaves the radiator (or enters the engine) than where the sensor is fitted in the engine. This may be to avoid worrying owners seeing temperatures near or at the boiling point of water and although it is entirely acceptable for the manufacturer to use any temperature he feels appropriate – it possibly disguises the need to investigate slight temperature rises that may be contributory factors leading to a damaged cylinder – caused by some slight deterioration of a parts or parts of the car."

BUT... we DO have the relevant engine temp. it IS provided by the oil temp!
The coolant temp in whatever point is measured, is an indication of the cooling system condition. It does go up if the cooling system is stressed and it will rapidly go up if there is a leak. Not hard to understand, is it?
If I ever seen a 'storm in a tea cup' about nothing, this is it.
The OPs question was whether or not the reading on the gauge face was accurate. We have now all established that it is NOT. A tempest perhaps, but it makes for a waste of space on the dash and potentially distracts the driver from the true indicator of engine temp, the oil temp, as you so eloquently state in UPPERCASE letters.
From your tagline "Dream as impractical, irrational and unnecessary as that may be... Here's to the Dreamers!" -- Porsche AG."
It should perhaps be replaced with "The temperature gauge is impractical, irrational, and unncecessary as that may be, Here's to the temperature gauge!"

Why don't you use that as a tag line. Not me, as I do not agree with it. And another suggestion... you are free to tape your car's coolant temp gauge and ignore it, if you like. I think its information is relevant.
Incidentally... 2 other German cars (different marques) I drive exhibit the same coolant temp gauge behavior you are so fervently criticizing. I think it's just right.
