Repainted hood and bumper and resale value...

I have a 2006 C2S in Arctic Silver. It's perfect, low miles, no scratches, no dings, etc. However, on a recent road trip I ended up with many rock chips on the hood and front bumper. I'm going to have it repainted use a comp claim with insurance and then have a clear bra put on (full hood). Will the repaint affect resale value? I'm going to go to the body shop my dealer recommended. They say they use the same paint as they do at the factory and the guy there has been painting 911s for 30 years... Thoughts?

It will affect the price with certain buyers who want it all original. Many people get the front bumper repainted, so that isn't as big a deal as repainting the hood. The trouble is that in order to get the paint to match in Arctic Silver is a bit tricky. Normally they have to blend into the front quarterpanels too. I'd make sure to keep the receipts so if/when you do sell it, you have what was actually done fully documented. Take photos of it before you get it painted too.

I was afraid of that with Arctic Silver... Obviously I wish I didn't have to repaint the hood but I don't think I really have a choice. There are 5 or 6 pretty substantial rock chips so it seems like my only option, especially with this color.

Just get it done, the hood and front bumper are common items to get repainted. If you sell it, worry about it then. IMO any one that wants one 100% perfect should go buy a new one.

no effect

It should have no effect at all.... take before and after pics to prove it was paint to clean up the front from some light chips etc and not due to a major accident or other.

If you had a collector item (year, model other) level car may suggest not but otherwise I think paint work to clean up some chips etc is fine... once you do it add the clear bra and never have to worry about it again...

This makes me feel better. I appreciate it. I'll go ahead and get it done as planned...

i would not worry about resale value. instead, i'd be worried about color matching. i really doubt it'll match unless you blend. ask your painter.

also, wait 30 days for the paint to dry before putting on the clear bra. don't hurry this process by putting it in the paint bake room. certain chemical takes time to release. you don't want the clear bra to pull the paint off if u ever have to replace it.

Good advice. Thank you. I just called and talked to them and they said they same... They will be blending the paint so it matches and told me to wait at least 30 days for the clear bra. So hopefully I'm in good hands. I figured if it's good enough for the dealer, it should be fine.

If you go to a quality shop, isn't it almost impossible to know if a hood or bumper has been repainted? Most dealers use paint thickness checks for variations between assembly line automated factory paint vs hand paint. Since all 911's are hand painted, can they tell the difference?

It's crazy, no one wants chips, nicks and scratches but no one wants paint work to fix those either. I would rather have it look good as a buyer or seller than chipped on the front. Having said that though, many dealers will use it to leverage a lower value on the vehicle.

911's are painted with modern robots like most other cars.

I had a 997 that had some heavy damage, after it was repaired I had an appraiser put a value on the depreciation, and one of the tools that he used would measure the paint thickness. The OEM paint was very consistent in thickness, where as the new paint had more variation. This was more common in area's of the blending with the original paint.

This is incorrect.

The primer coat and underbody are the only parts of the body that are robotically painted. The color coat and clear are hand painted by factory technicians.

Manual application of top coat: The top coat is applied in special cabins in which clean-room conditions prevail. The drying temperature is approx. 140º C.

well said, if the car hasn't been in a wreck you should be good, it is safe to say its expected for things like bumper marks and rock chips to happen to the paint, and doing over the bumpers especially at a authorized body shop recommended by your dealer shouldn't be a problem. What I would do is, take pictures of the car before and after just so the person has a idea of what happened and why you did it, just to keep a record, and the receipts from the authorized Body shop the dealer recommended to you.
