Advice - 2011 Carrera S
However -- Do you buy a new 2011 or wait --
I would wait . When the new car arrives you now have extra choices and the money saved now is better off in your account than on the road depreciating . Also give the new car at least 6 months to sell. The initial "gotta have it" buyer might be willing to overpay and typically I observe the good deals pop up in July (when inventorty is still high and leftovers are not desired by dealerships).
So that's 1.5 years away .
Unless that wait just seems like too much and the desire to have the current car is so great after you test drive a car.

wait.
if u get one now, i guarantee u will trade it in when the new one comes out.. i can see it now
A lot of reasons --
For starters I fell in love with a Gt3Rs speced exactly the way i would have on a dealership lot that was already sold. I offered to buy it if he changed his mind as they waited for him to pick it up after his trip. He bought the car.
I had a lot of time to think .
1) I already have and love my Turbo
2) I don't even drive my cars all the time
3) The roads in my area have constuction
4) I am not a track driver
5) The average drivers who share the roads and parking lack a lot of courtesy and skill .
6) I would have taken a loss on the PDK car to buy the car.
7) the PDK car seemed more practical and less worry
8) I already bought the PDK car .. somewhat missed the boat I feel compared to a Gt3RS.
The more i thought .. the less it made sense given my needs and circumstances.
The car itself is purely amazing . That's about the only thing I didn't doubt .

lol. If I do get one now (90% convinced I should), by the time the new one comes out it will have been about a year. I could sit tight one more year after that and then upgrade. After all, that second year I will still have an awesome car to drive around.
that's a tough decision to make..but if i were you i would wait for the new one but the wait is sometimes the hardest part. and just for your information, i check with one of the porsche dealer last time and they said it's probably not going to come on sale until 2012. So i'm not sure about that. But i bought 2011 Carrera S recently with a nice options and i will feel regret if the new model is out on the mid of 2011 or sooner. however, i browse online and it's going to debut sometime around late 2011, so i guess it will out for sale on 2012 most likely. If the new model is out for sale on 2012, i'm ok with that
.
.
Everything I read says that it's going to debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show, which is in September I believe. So 2012 is probably the earliest I would be able to get my hands on one, I think.
Side-note. Just saw an article on yahoo news about insurance costs. The Carrera S is listed as the 8th most costly to insure, with a National average of just over $3k. When I spoke with someone at Statefarm, they said $600 every 6 months.

Instead of 2011 at 10-15% off you could wait 8 months and pay 2% under msrp. I think I'd wait. If you don't think the new model is worth it you be able to get a 997.2 at 20% off. I mean, it's gotta depreciate when the new model arrives
I don't think he'll get 20 percent but it costs nothing to ask. This post is lengthy but sums up observations and adds some speculation.
I've noticed that inventories in general are low in contrast to previous years . Do you remember back in 2009 when there were so many cars that dealerships were given incentives if they accepted a car off the boat ? In 2010 there are a less but supply was still plentiful. It seems like with the success of the new Cayenne and Panamera plus the end of the 997 model cycle upcoming , plus the greater amount of models .. seems like less cars are available compared to the past. One can still find a dealership with 15 997 cars but some are Gt3, or gr3Rs or Turbo or Turbo s . It's not uncommon to see 8 cars of 997S where 4 are coupes , 4 cabs , and half are pdk or manual . That means the search can narrow to 2 or three cars and its only january. Now I have no idea if more are expected but this type of selection was more typical of August than January.
It actually is a smart move to produce less . It preserves the price so if the new car has an increase it isn't as dramatic . Plus the CPO program is succesful and used cars are plentiful --many of which are priced quite high. So a CPO car will sell, generate profit, need service, and bring the owner back to buy another car in a shorter time frame .
I know you got a good deal and so did I .
But todays prices are not the same .
Thanks for replying. Your reasons are very similar to mine. The more I am thinking the less it is making sense... I'm going back and forth on whether to trade in my C4S. I've found a Gt3RS that is what I would want as far as options. I really love my turbo also so that's not going anywhere. Just deciding if I want to take the hit on the 09 C4S which I had modified with TechArt or not move on it and save my money. I am in an area with construction too and the people around the area also lack courtesy in general so with my turbo and C4S I'm always on high alert as far as other drivers etc. The Gt3rs will never make sense if you know what I mean! LOL. In saying that, the car is definitely amazing.
I've been searching inventories and found cars scattered across the country, however when I called up 2 dealers and had them do a search they said they only found a few cars matching my criteria (like 2 or 3). On the their lots they have maybe one or two 997S' or so. Apparently not much on order either. One of my concerns about waiting was that their wouldn't be that big of a selection down the road. Champion Porsche in Naples seems to have a whole lot of 2010s though.
The car I was looking at is priced at around 101k, and I was looking to get it for 90k +- (would that be a good deal?)
True, when the 991 comes out the factory may have some incentives like an extra 9k discount. I dunno...there is always something better on the horizon or a better deal to be had.
My first step is to secure some financing at a good rate, then I'll worry about the rest. I'm even getting impatient waiting for the new iPads. When you wait for something, it's like time is at a standstill.

in my opinion, this is the best timing to get into a 997 now. however, that only apply to few conditions. get a 2010 if u can still find one. that will be awesome deal in terms of value. 2010 & 2011 are the same except the new GTS, which is overpriced imo anyway.
u're not gonna find a 2011 for the deal u're looking for nor the deal is worth considering. by the time the new car comes on in 2012 the 2011 will drop quite a bit regardless how much u paid for.
i say find a 2010 or wait for 2012. skip the 2011.

HOWEVER --
I can not see financing a 2010 car at this time especially after reading that you might be unsure when the 2012 car arrives . The 2010 car is 1.5 model years old and that means that on the day you buy it it a used car that is nearing 2 years old (approx value 75-80K) . If you want that 2012 car it will be worth even less and the loss is further componded by the finance fees . In my opinion .. this is financial freefall and NO car is worth it.
If you told me that you were saving to hopefully even pay cash for the 2012 car .. it's still not cheap but at least it makes sense.
If you loved the 2011 car, planned on keeping it forever .. then even that makes some sense.
If you found a 2009 in the low to mid 70's with low miles, CPO , and in great shape .. that makes some sense.
Yes --waiting is hard ... but it's better to buy no car at all than to buy the wrong car and there is never anything lost by holding on to savings .

True. Definitely not considering a 2010 car. If I do decide on a 2011, I can sit tight for 2 years (or 2 1/2 years) before considering a change. I usually only hold onto cars for 2-3 years anyway, but partly because i've never completely loved a car before. So i can't say for sure if i would keep the 997S forever. I do know that the novelty won't wear off too soon.
The smart thing to do is wait (and save). That's really not my strong suit though lol.

I was just in the same boat starting out looking for a Carrera/Carrera S and was going to wait for the 991 but ended up with a 2011 Turbo on order scheduled for April delivery.
A few things I found out during the process:
BTW, the new 991 will have a brand new interior similar to the Panermera and new Cayenne, so you may want to take a look at the Panemera interior and see if it is your cup of tea. My wife and I were both turned off by the gadgety and chromed interior. But that is definitely a personal taste.
A few things I found out during the process:
- Any discount shared on this forum are really individual and market driven. Any discount referred here can only be taken as a data point but you cannot expect to replicate the result at all.
- C2S and base Carrera do seem to be a lot easier to get discount. GTS is very difficult to get anything off.
- The cars are not selling as fast as the dealers want you to believe, I saw the car I tried to buy from 3 months ago still on the dealer's lot. But somehow, some of the dealers I was negotiating with seem to really have faith in the market turning, so accordingly, they stood fast on the price.
- Try to go out-of-town and try a market with a lot of big dealers. I am in No Cal which has quite a number of dealers but all of them have relatively low inventory. I ended up buying in So. Cal where there are a number of large dealers with a lot of inventories. The discount I got was a lot better than the best I got locally. (I got almost next to nil locally after a 3 hours dealer visit, so I walked on a $500 discrepancy out of principle.) And since dealing out-of-town is done mostly over email and phone, it also takes the stress out of the process.

Thanks for the tips. I purchased a car from the dealership I'm looking at before (Audi Q5), and they seem to be pretty good. I have no problems walking away from a deal though if I'm not happy.
I like the idea of getting a 997S and then, perhaps 2 years from now, going to the next level. Whether that's Porsche or Lamborghini, who knows. My biggest regret was going from an M3 to a GTI.
Speaking about the M3 and interiors. I mentioned having a 2004 M3. Loved the interior. Although I've been disappointed with how the newer interiors on BMW looks. Very straight dash and not very comfortable. I've peeked into the windows of some Cayenne's and Panamera's. I wasn't completely turned off, more indifferent.
