Advice - 2011 Carrera S

Hello! This is my first post. I've been searching endlessly on google for things like "is it worth waiting for a 2012 911" etc.

I've been racking my brain considering my options. 2010 Carreras, 2011 Carrera S. GTS....or sit tight and wait.

I usually return to the same place, just get a 2011 Carrera S (hopefully very close to invoice) with PDK and Sport Chrono (i'm not big on options). It's a large purchase of course, and I don't want to end up regretting my decision.

So....should i just take the plunge? I really want to jump in a Porsche soon, and can't really imagine waiting upwards of 8-9 months.

What I do know is that if I do end up getting the car, I'll probably spend a lot of time here because there is a wealth of information.

Great question and i do feel opinions will vary . BTW .. had this same question been about a Turbo s or a Gt3 I would tell you to buy those cars . The Turbo redesign will come in 2014 and the current Gt3 is the last pure dry sump legend.

However -- Do you buy a new 2011 or wait --

I would wait . When the new car arrives you now have extra choices and the money saved now is better off in your account than on the road depreciating . Also give the new car at least 6 months to sell. The initial "gotta have it" buyer might be willing to overpay and typically I observe the good deals pop up in July (when inventorty is still high and leftovers are not desired by dealerships).

So that's 1.5 years away .
Unless that wait just seems like too much and the desire to have the current car is so great after you test drive a car.

1.5 years is way too long for me lol. I have been seriously considering the GTS, but it's maybe 10k more than the S (Would cost roughly $200 more per month). That's also money that can go towards the Mini Cooper S I currently drive or maintenance costs etc. I did test drive the S, maybe if I test drive the GTS I can see if it's that much more worth it. Like I said earlier, not that big on options....and these GTS' on the lot are packed with extras.

What is the general feeling about the upcoming 911? Would it be that much better? Honestly, I had a 2004 M3 and don't really think the new models are much better (cosmetically at least). IMO.

BTW....I'm in Orlando.

that is a long wait.. what about a base 997.2 it will lower your cost, just some nice 19" wheels and nice exhaust tips the car looks great, my point of view.. you can get it with some options.. if the car is just for pleasure..

I originally was looking at the Boxster Spyder, and then focused on a base Carrera. I keep on upgrading myself though. I also tell myself "this car i'm going to keep"....which usually never happens (C230, M3, GTI). Even the Cooper S i'm thinking of selling down the road. So I figured the Carrera S is the better car if I do plan on keeping it (or at least longer than 3 years).

the S is a very nice car.. boxster spyder is really nice, but my previews car was a cayman S, I think 2 seaters is small lol, Don't have room since carrera has small room on the back I love it, you can move seats further back.. and for me I can put 2 girls on the back

You never know. I had an e39 M5 I sold thinking the e60s would even be better. Not for me though it turns out.

The current 997 is a great car and the new car will be a little larger and more gadgety looking inside. But is also may be a refinement that some will like. We won't really know until it is out. I worry they are moving the car away from what makes it cool, but maybe that will turn out not to be true.

A year+ is a long wait if you need a car. If you want to avoid big depreciation, maybe look for a nice '09 and then if the '12s are worth doing, you have time to work that out and you have a great car in the mean time.

These are all good points. So I can't really go wrong getting a 2011, but might feel a little foolish towards the end of the year. True, I don't need a car right now...it's purely a want. I justify by telling myself that I don't know what the future holds for me or where I will be 9 months from now. I think i'm going to start some proper negotiating, and if I don't like what's out there (or the price) then I'll most likely end up waiting...

I've never got a pre-owned car before. For no particular reason, I just feel more comfortable buying new (unless maybe I was looking at exotics).

Get a used '09 now and then upgrade to a 2012 about 6 months after it's come out.

Pick ip a nice cpo and plan on trading it in two years from now towards the 998. That way you avoid the major depreciation hit and have something to drive and use as a down payment later.

I think the 997 will be the water cooled 993. A classic that is viewed by many as better and more true to the original that its successor.

Out of curiosity, how high do dealers price their CPOs? I was browsing 2009s and 2010s (not really looking at options)...but they seemed to be about 10-15k less than what I'm aiming to pay new.

Quite often the sentiment on the future car is negative UNTIL the car arrives and the nay sayers drive it . Some will still pound the pavement favoring the older model but no one can know until it actually arrives.

Whether you opt for a 2011 997S or the Gts --both will depreciate . For the price of a Gts I just can't see turning down a Gt3 especially if options are not important because it sounds like luxury is not the big priority.

I also don't like to buy used unless the new car is such a stretch financially but in this particular case the price gap of a 2011 GTS and a used 2009 997S is approx 60K . That's significant.

The GTS configured to my liking is just under 110k (MSRP). The CPOs i've seen online are about 30-35k less than the GTS. My target for the 2011 997S is 90k +- a few k.
