If you had to do it all over ...... ??????
Chris Harris is saying that the 911 is a thing of great beauty but because of Porsche variants flooding the market the basic 911 is labeled as a "generic"
offering.
[quote=yrralis1;3097326]Would you have bought the same 997s OR a Gt3 ?
Forget price .
Forget that you already bought the car .
Go back in time .
My vote --- GT3 !!!!!
This is a no brainer for me...the GT3, by a mile! After driving a friends GT3 (on the track and on the highway) it's hard to believe my C4S is built on the same frame. Nothing about these cars are the same. I was totally happy with my car until I drove the GT3...big mistake on my part and I hope to correct the mistake in the near future. I posted a thread on the GT3 forum titled "Why did I drive a GT3", check it out, lots of good feedback on this same topic.
GT3, here I come!
Please don't post about comfort, stiff ride, etc., unless you have driven a GT3, if you drove it and aren't in love, then you need to buy a Lexus.
I can totally understand people not caring for the big wing, but in terms of driving a pure sports car, it's epic.
Just my two cents...
All the best!

I wouldn't change anything as each car was an experience and served a particular purpose. Now having said that, if I had to choose among the Porsches I've had, and assuming I'd not DD it, I'd go with my 997.2 GT3.
Caveat -- I'd DD that car if I didn't live in a snow climate.

An interesting article in the February 2011 issue of Excellence magazine regarding the many variants of the 911. The "limited edition" Porsches have emasculated the production 911's and made them "less special" and "ordinary" according to Chris Harris.
If it doesn't have a variant placard then it's "just a 911"

The 911 always has been special compared to mundane cars up and down the dealer's row in any town. But if you're a Porsche person, you always knew about the extra special version you could order if you knew the right people. And had the ponies for it.

GT3 not as versatile as the S. Can't beat a car as great as the 997 that can carry 4 people. I can't make the choice without driving a GT3 though. The aerokit and stiffer suspension convert the car from a DD to a weekend warrior. Not sure anyone that's voted GT3 would use it as a DD. No second guessing my car. Not to mention, the main thing that I notice is that if I had a GT3 or a TT, driving most of the time the experience would be no different. With traffic, cops and the like, I get to exercise the car 10-20% of the time. The rest, the interiors are virtually identical. Yet, the S gives the ultimate experience with the best value!
Gt3 gt3 gt3
However, I'm loving my base 06 Carrera that I've been slowly been 'building' to my specification.....with GT3 seats, Sycamore Steering wheel, shift ****, handbrake. AWE exhaust. Aluminum pedals. Factory short shift. ITG Air Filter. And shortly installing Bilstein PSS9.
Only thing I would never do again is H&R Springs.
But this one's a Keeper, and if it wasn't it would be a GT3.

I will still rather have the Carrera S (in my case, the club coupe), and the only reason is the rear seats.
I use it all the time with the kids. Rear seats are very useful for me. Can't take the kids to school in a GT3. I will have to drive back and fore 3 times.
Now that I have both 997S and GT3RS. They really are different cars. One is a true sport car that is perfect for the track but only OK for daily use, the other is a great GT car that can be driven on track and also perfect for daily use.
Tough decision to pick one over the other. I said get them both.

Yes --the 997S is more versatile but that's precisely why it's lacking.
In order to supply the practical aspects .. it diminishes every category of greatness . It's not as fast as the Turbo nor as precise as the Gt3 . It fits 4 people but not even as well as an M3 . In fact if all I wanted was a small car I could have bought so many others which are much cheaper and also lacking and saved a lot of money. Being practical is not what captured me about the Porsche 911 .
To me the 997S is the jock of all but the master of none .
I realize that a do over is impossible because to switch it means that the dymanics have changed but I don't want to repeat the same type of car choice process when I buy my next car as i have felt with this 997S . Oddly enough .. I don't feel this way with my Turbo. I don't even feel this way about my Honda . I felt similar with the M3 UNTIL I went to trade it in .. that's when I realized how much it was worth keeping . With the 997S I keep it, and drive it occasionally and it really is a very tastefully customized car yet it just doesn't ring my bell in quite the same way of what i imagine possible with the gt3 (which I also would not choose to drive every day) .
I do feel that the concept of "just a 911" is hard to grasp because it takes a car which so many value and renders it to mediocrity . How can that be one might think? Drive a Gt3 or a Turbo depending on which category you find more fascinating . Then drive the 997S and if those perceptions remain the same .. then you probably chose the right car for you . That's actually a good thing.
But if they don't .. you might reexamine those original thoughts about the car.
