anyone see their tires turn into "Bolts"?

By bolts, I meant that the inside edge is no longer perfectly round. There are lots of short flatspots all the way around the tire in an even pattern like a bolt on the inside edge. Otherwise called cupping. I'm fairly certain I have too much toe out causing the tires to drag a long the pavement a bit. I have an alignment scheduled for next week.
MDRUMS, I hear you have some good specs possibly for a street setup. My car is a 997.1 C2 with 19inch wheels and stock suspension.
I don't autocross or go to the track so I'd love to get some extra tire life without loosing all of the performance out of the car.
PM me if you have any specs to share.
Thanks

I am the same way....I like fresh tires and the right tires for the appropriate weather conditions. But lets not get too critical on those trying to save a few bucks...some of us older guys have gotten to where we are because we made smart decisions on how to allocate our resources.

I dont have much money. In fact many would say (and do) that I am stupid to buy the car when I should be saving and looking to buy a home. But even with my little funds I still managed to eek out the cash for Porsche approved winter tires knowing that doing it right makes much more sense.
A Subaru STI comes with dedicated summer tires as well. You can buy a new car for 33K roughly. Even at that cost I found it stupid to buy all seasons. It is a performance car...why would you hurt it performance rather than spend a few bucks.
BTW nothing against the OP. I may come across as harsh and I am sorry if I do. Just want you to make the smart decision rather than the cheap and easy one.

No worries...personally, I am very critical myself about tires and I swap mine out depending on weather. In fact, I only buy Porsche approved tires as well and actually get rid of them well before their end of life. However, I think the worst insult is to tell someone on this forum is that they should drive a Prius because of their tire choice (ouch!). Fortunately, terpsred has a good sense of humor. +1 for terpsred.

I had two sets of PZERO Rossos and both were like wood at ~8K. Just wicked loud and poor wear patterns. Will never use PZEROs again. There are MUCH better tires for you 997. Google Car and Driver - they did a great tire compare last year (I think)

So when the OP gets the alignment done, let us know.
The original mystery: what caused the tire damage, still needs to be answered.
Age, itself, should not be the primary factor. 5 yrs old is old, but not that old. Tire pressure or alignment issues may be the root cause.
So let us know what you find out once you have the issue fixed.

I'm no one's financial adviser and I won't preach on how people should spend their money, spend it however they see fit.
I'm not sure, but don't tyres have a maximum shelf life of 3 years?

To give back and close out my tire wear issue. I had an alignment done today. The rears AND the front wheels were all set as toe out by 0 degrees 6 minutes on the front and o degrees 7 minutes on the rear. I'm now set to proper camber (1 degree 47 minutes) on the rear, (33 minutes on the front),slight toe in (10 minutes) on the rear and near zero (3 minutes) toe on the front.
Handling is superb

So is the thinking the tire damage resulted from the toe angle in place prior to the alignment (out 6' vs now in 10')?

The test was done here I think. Please give me a call and we can discuss the best tire for your needs. I've never seen the Pirellis wear that way.
