Going through NJ inspection today (moved from CA so had to have it done) and the car wouldn't start up after they shut it off to hook up the emissions computer. After I had it jumped, they told me at the inspection center it would fail as "not ready" and I needed to put X miles on it before the system resets. Anyone have any information on this? Also, somehow during the jump process, my rain sensor failed.

goncookoo is infamous around these parts
Im not sure about Porsches, but this happened to my Altima. Engine light came on, got it fixed, but the dealer said they couldnt do the inspection because I need to drive it at least 100 miles to reset the system, otherwise itd fail.

So if youre asking if they are 'telling you the truth' I suspect they are.
Id like this confirmed on Porsches too if anyone has info.

Yes, it's still under warranty.

well, I was hoping they told the truth. I should have been clear. I was wondering how far I need to drive the Porsche to reset.

since "yes" is the case, I believe that a dealership should be able to "do" the state inspection (and they'd be the ones to know if your car needs to "re-set")

it's not the re-inspection, but the initial one so I believe it needs to be done at a NJ state inspection station. Regardless, the dealer is 35 miles away, so I was hoping I could just run the car X miles and reset and then inspect it.

OBDII is sophisticated and must run a series of tests before it's 'ready' for inspection. They can tell if it's ready by the codes they read out. Over the course of normal driving these various tests are performed, but you can also trick it or force it to run these tests by following a pattern. I had to do this for a previous vehicle but I believe it's the same for all OBDII. Here are the steps:

Engine coolant must be less than 25 degrees Celsius before starting.
- Start the engine
- Shift gear selector to drive
- Accelerate gently to 1500-2000 rpm
- Drive for 5 minutes at 1500-2000 rpm
- Run the engine at idle speed for 70 seconds
- Drive engaged, air conditioning off
- Drive for 6 minutes at 1500-2000 rpm
- Run the engine at idle speed for 40 seconds
- Drive engaged, air conditioning off
- Drive for 5 minutes at 1500-2000 rpm
- Run the engine at idle speed for 50 seconds
- Drive for 5 minutes at 1500-2000 rpm
- Engine brake from 4000 rpm to approximately 1300 rpm a few times.

NOTE: Do not use the accelerator pedal during engine braking
