Badge Delete - Oops! Fixed with a detail

Along the lines of the recent thread where the guy put on gauge faces but may have broken one of the gauge needles...
Every time I try to work on my car, even for the simplest things, I seem to screw something up. Take a look at this photo:

I followed some instructions here, using goo-be-gone and a blow dryer, but I still crewed up. Probably got too impatient and over-rubbed, etc. This is not an easy job, and I obviously messed up. When I was doing it in the garage, I didn't notice how bad it was. When I opened the door and let the light in, and saw how bad it was - and that it wouldn't come out with a bit of spray wax, I was devastated. I'm not handy with wax and polishing (afraid of screwing that up, too), so I finally arranged to get the car detailed. I contacted Jean-Claude at Detailed Designs here in ATL, and he explained that he'd probably be able to fix it.

I got the Level 1 Paint Correction, and he not inly fixed my mess above, but helped with other scratches and micro issues.

Take a look at what a great job he did where the badge mess was:

Here are some more photos:

Thanks to Jean Claude for fixing my car. I'm enjoying my car more than ever, and plan to get a wax done every-other month. That peace of mind is really reassuring, knowing that I've got a plan to keep my car looking great.

wow, all i had to do was "floss off" my badge and then used a little dab of bug and tar remover for the bits of leftover glue. took all of 5 mins and cant tell where it was. (of course, seal grey might have something to do with it too.) but glad it worked out for you!

btw, where did you get the relective rim tape? i have the same set in black and was thinking of something like that. if you have some time, do me a favor and post a couple close ups? i would much appreciate it.

thanks!

Sounds like you went a little crazy with trying to get the goo off. On my most recent purchase, I pulled the badges off with my fingers since I could get my nails under the edge of them. I used my fingers to get the glue residue off too. No scratches or signs anything was there.

I got mine from a place called Graphic Language. I did some internet searching, and they looked like the best place for what I wanted. Their in GA, where I am, which was a bonus, but really only shaved time off of shipping. I bought via phone/web...

I could take some photos - what are you looking to see? That was one DIY job that turned out pretty well. I get a bunch of compliments on them.

Yeah, I was pretty embarrassed about it. I was sooooo bummed. I figured I'd post anyway to show how it all worked out.

What's going on with you guys? Are you trying to get that European look, without any indication of what your car is? Do you understand why they remove all markings in Europe, on BMW, Porsche and other nice cars?

I guess, all tastes are in nature

For me, I didn't like the way that the Carrera S logo in silver was such a contrast to my black car. I considered painting it black, or buying a black logo. Anyway, once it was off, I thought it looked great. Someone else on this board said they removed theirs, then put on a '911' to break up all the space. I like all that empty space. Makes the back looks wider (or am I stretching here). Well - I do like it better this way, and may eventually put a black logo on, but probably not.

Also, I swapped my front crest for a matte black one and that looks great, too. The gold was so bright, a bit blingy, and a bit inconsistent with the look I was going for...

Your right - different tastes. I like mine debadged plus it's easier to wash and detail without the emblem snagging the cloth. Car folks seem to know what it is without the badges.

The detailing job looks real good. Black cars don't allow for a lot of swirl margin.

You had good reflexes to go for the pro to fix the screwup instead of trying to do it yourself.

I've learned a while back that as long as you don't do TWO screwups in a row, like trying to buff your mistake yourself with a rotary when you've never used one, that screwing up is actually called "learning from experience".

TWO screwups in a row are really called a f*up. .

Looks great, and yes I agree the silver badges really stand out on the black cars. It's not so bad as long as you've retained the original silver wheels but once those are black it's a bit of an eye-sore. I'm also a fan of the "911" badge.

Glad you got it sorted, car looks great.

I can relate to that. I have, on more than 1 occassion, tried to fix something and wound up with a bigger problem that I set out to correct. It's all part of the adventure of handymanism. Just take comfort in the fact that you are not alone and there are only two kinds of do-it-yourselfers, the kind that will admit that they screw up sometimes and the kind that let someone else do it for them.

Jack,

I had the same issue when I removed my badge. I believe my detailer called it etching. He was able to fix it right up.

Damptronics still working out well for you?

Yes - working out really well! One of my best mods! May consider RSS control arms down the road to complete the 'riding on rails' experience, but need to fund the mod budget. Glad to have heard you experience with the Motons on the street. Sorry they didn't work out for you, but good to have the comparison vs the Damptronics. Great info for the community.

Glad to hear it. I think I could have gotten the Motons to work fine for the street. They are basically infinitely adjustable if you take into account the multitude of spring weights I could have gone with. But climbing through my roll bar and getting under the rear panel to adjust them all the time would have been a pain. In the end, I truly believe that Damptronics are the best dual purpose C/O for PASM equipped 997's.

Jason
