grinding into 2nd gear

Hello everyone new member here and just spend the good part of the entire morning reading through posts! decided to ask a question of me own...

I just purchased a 2006 cpo 997 and noticed (after the purchase) that there is a soft grind when i upshift into second gear. when i took it back they said that it is normal with this model, so i drove two other cars they had on their lot and they did the same thing into second.

any thoughts?

thank you forum members!

Is it a grind or a notchiness? These cars have heavy balk type synchronizers. My car has less than 7000 miles on it and it never grinds but it hard to get into first sometimes and a bit notchy when cold. If your clutch pedal is fully depressed there should be no grinding at all. I there is grinding, either the sycnhro is worn or the release bearing is worn. If the release bearing is worn you may have grinding in all gears or the car might creep a bit when in first with the clutch pedal fully depressed.

i dont get a full-on grind, but it definitely does not go into second smoothly on upshift. i dont have this issue with any of the other gears either.

notchiness? maybe but i feel like there is metal hitting metal but very mild. also this never happens when i downshift into second.

it does not happen as often when the car is warmed up either.

thank you for your replies.

Hi, I don't have any grind at all no matter how fast I shift.
Something must be wrong mechanically!

My car also make a heavy thump when shifting into 2nd. The synchros in 1st and 2nd in these cars use , I believe, 3 steel cones rather than two brass cones to handle the heavy components. If the dealer service rep says it is normal it is probably OK. If you are not convinced have an experienced Porsche driver drive your car with you or have a service tech try it. In any case if it gets worse make sure it is attended to before the warranty expires.

Enjoy!

Interesting post. I have experienced this same issue maybe 3 or 4 times while upshifting, never on a downshift, and thought it was just me being lazy with the clutch. But if you're getting the grinding everytime you upshift into 2nd that's not normal and should be looked into by the dealer. If they won't do it, bring it to the attention of the regional Porsche rep and get their opinion on how normal the problem is.

This is totally normal ... On both my old Boxster and my old 997.1, there was a very slight grinding/notchiness when entering 2nd gear on upshift (never on down shift). That said though, it didn't happen EVERY time I shifted into 2nd. I'd say probably 30% of the time. Never had any problems as a result of it though and from what I understand it's quite normal.

Well if I read your post correctly, you're new to driving Porsche's and all three (yours and the two others you test drove) had this symptom. I'd guess that it's unlikely that you ran in to three consecutive problem cars but rather it's more likely to be you.
I don't find the Porsche gearbox to be difficult, but every manual has it's own nuances. It is a bit notchy (I have the short-shift kit in mine making it noticeably notchy) going in to 2 and 3, particularly when cold. But I never rush the shifts in my car, shifting only when the car 'lets' me. I also depress the clutch to the floor. Neither are absolutely essential. You can feel your way to make faster and reasonably safe shifts. But if you are moving things quickly, you may bump up against the speed of the gearbox or a clutch that is not fully disengaged when you shift.
Sorry, can only make guesses at this point.

I had the same post up a few weeks back when I got my car. Apparently this is normal as my dealer checked the car for me and told me that this notchiness is normal, plus the gang here told me the same.

I still protest that this should not be happening on an expensive sports car, but in all honestly I really stopped caring about it once I knew my tranny was fine. Stop freaking out and just drive the thing!

I thinkk the 911 is not so bad regarding the action of the gear shift lever if you consider that the trans is behind you. I also have a BMW 535 as my daily driver and it is very smooth except the 2nd gear synchro is horribly notchy. And, the BMW trans is basically right there under the lever.

At this point I'm not sure what the OP's original issue was, grinding or difficulty getting into 2nd gear or both. I wouldn't consider grinding normal nor acceptable. I would agree that a less than smooth, or notchy, transition into 2nd is common, more so on short shifters, and would accept it as not worth worrying about. With that said, it may well be correctable with proper adjustment of the shift cables.

I would, however, always take issue with any dealer whose stock answer to issues like this in the car they are trying to sell is " they all do it " as " they all do it " isn't an answer. It's a lame excuse for an unwillingness to admit they have no clue and could care less. OMO

My 06 C2 is notchy as well, especially when cold. This is normal.

thanks for the input...much appreciated.

sounds like this is a common issue, i spoke to a mechanic friend about it and he agrees that it may be a synchro problem but also says that it "probably" will not do harm.

not normal and not uncommon problem? i guess i'll have to just wait and see.

thanks again.

No grinding, but definitely resistance shifting in to 1st and 2nd. Once the car (and transmission oil) is fully warmed-up, shifting is totally smooth.
