Just Bought a 996 Carrera, 2 Questions
Howdy guys
Just bought the car I was mentioning in the "How Rich" thread.
Thanks again for your responses. I am sure if I posted on a finance forum or someting I woudlda received a diff resposne, but oh well. hehe.
Anyway, I am excited for the car... But I NEED to get my ipod hooked up in her fast. In my BMW i have a simple audio cord that comes from the glove box. Can I hook up something similar in the Porsche or do I have to drop like 500 on some sophisticated system? And where do I start? I'd prefer to do it just with the cord as I actaully enjoy the simplicity of it in my bmw. I guess what I am asking is: Can I get an audio shop to put the audio port in? I realize the port isn't there by default.
Second, what about the GPS in the system? I kinda didn't want navigation because I htought it would be datedand almost old school which it proobably is. BUT, can you upgrade it? Can I buy / pirate software to update the maps and stuff? Its a 2006 carrera.
Thanks
Matt

good luck..enjoy
Hmm, this would mean 997.1?
Sorry to burst your bubble, but this was one of the main things that really drew me to 997.2 in my search for used 997.1 vs 997.2. (yeah call me weak and tied to technology) I really got used to the iPod connection in my 5er and wanted the iPod connectability, but from all my research (search this forum!) you have to buy some interface which will likely cost at least $500 (e.g., DICE integration). But even for more functionality, Pioneer makes a great NAV headunit with iPod connectivity and Bluetooth, but it's a total $2k install. Still it's better than a >$2K retrofit for the OEM nav unit alone!! You have to rip out the whole PCM though...
Hope that helped...

I know it's not the best overall sound quality but you could always get one of those FM transmitter Ipod adapters for the car if you don't want to go the expensive route.
You can also can check out Dice Electronics http://diceelectronics.com/dice_validator.php
They have a couple units that work with the car. I have a Dice unit in my M5 and it does what I need it to.

Congrats and drive her in good health!
For iPod, contact forum sponsor Eric @ bumperplugs.com - get the Dension 500. You can self install. It's a little quirky but all in all it functions well and integrates.
As for NAV, if your PCM has NAV already, yes you cna buy updated discs thru Porsche but know each update disc is the price++ as a new Garmin.
So, that being said, to kill two birds w/ one stone, you might consider ripping out he stock system and going aftermkt. There are some nice units out there which would integrate well.
Good luck and gain congrats!

I had two 996 cars (2000 and 2002) . I am not a techno gadget guy so i don't have the audio questions . At that time I just had a CD changer .
Congrats on the car .
What year etc...

I'm still not much of a gadget guy so i basically handed my car to tuner and said "give me the best" .
I do have ipod now . It works through the PCM . It's slightly more tedious than the 997.2 but not bad at all .
I also have bluetooth .
I don't recall how much .. somewhere in the 1K ball park .(both plus install and tax)
I think the PCM in 05 was slightly updated in 06 which lasted until the redesign of the 09 car .
PCM2 will never be PCM3 - no software to upgrade.
For iPod, Blue Tooth, and Satelite, look up Nav-TV. Any good electronics place will make it work. iPod on NavTV sucks when it comes to shuffle, so you may look into Dension or another company. Look up iPod here on search and you will get tons of options.

For the iPod, I think the unit most guys are using is the Dension IceLink iPod™ Integration. Bumperplugs sells.
I've thought of getting one but I don't mind listening to the car. I have some mp3 cd's with about 50 songs on them that I just interchange.

Wait... our head unit plays MP3 CDs???
