question about cracked coils...

Hi,

I changed my plugs today, at 1.25 hours. not bad.

though, i also found that 5 out of the 6 coils are cracked! i will call the delaer on Monday and send them some picturesof what i found. i hope they will call it in to be changed.

though, i have another question. do cracked coils make the engine burn more fuel?

The ignition coils are a known maintenance issue, due to their exposure to road salts and spray. If the insulation is cracked, replace them all. Eventually, the coils will not fire, causing a check engine light and very rough running. The unburned fuel can also damage the catalytic converter.

What are you expecting the dealer to do about the coils besides suggest you replace them ? Is the car still under warranty ? You don't say how many miles are on the car but I agree they should be changed just not sure what dealer would do with pics ?

55000km

hi,

the car has 55000km. the car is still under warranty. i got it three weeks ago. the plugs hadnt been changed but i like to start fresh with any car i buy. i sentthe pictures to my dealer rep and will wait to see what he says. if he wants, he can send them to me and i will put them in. i will give him back the old ones. but i doubt they will do that.

Argue they should have found the problem before they sold you the car. They're not real expensive and I don't think they are normally a warranty item but maybe they will try to keep you happy.

Actually you may be surprised. They will probably be on warranty....I just had an extended warranty issued for my Cayenne as the coil packs are a known issue for cracking. The 997 is no different.....

Thats B.S.

You might be out in the boonies when the CEL comes on and require a flatbed or tow to get you to a repair facility. I'd press them for an immediate replacement. Seems to me you have a 'time bomb' ticking; coud go off tomorrow, next week, next month, etc etc. Rest assured it will go off at the worst time (Murphy's Law).

CEL for ignition problem will not be "a timebomb". The motor runs. You may at some point get "misfires" It might read as a problem with one cylinder at a time. Will he just replace the one coil? This is a grey area. The motor is apparently running well (no lights) but the coils show evidence of age, cracking etc. I'm not really sure what recourse you have here. Cracked coils I fear are usually at the owners expense during a service. Plugs normally get replaced out of warranty at 60K miles or so despite what the service interval is unless there is a problem. The technician will say " best to replace the coils now also"...and so it goes. Great car. Maybe you should just enjoy ownership, drive the hell out of it and discuss it with him again if you ever do get a cel for ignitions. What ever you do do not lose sleep over this. Good luck w your car.
