Ok. Some bad news.
AOS replaced. And now rear main seal is shot. They're dropping tranny tomorrow to confirm but I have to call porsche na tomorrow to have a chat about this. Not happy at all.

 

Ouch . . . . RMS replacement is a pretty simple job unlike a IMS replacement which requires the engine to broken down. I would suspect a Porsche Dealer's Service Shop will most likely ask about $500 for the RMS in addition to the AOS charges.

 

Ouch! RMS is about $2,000 at the dealer. I would assume an Indy will be cheaper.

 

Depending on how many miles are on the clutch it might be a good time to think about a new one.

 

I wish you good luck, please post all repaires and costs after all the repaires are done .

 

That really is bad news. If the tranny was already dropped for the other repairs, then most of the labor has already been taken care of and replacing the RMS will be alot cheaper. But if they have to drop the tranny just for the RMS, then the labor costs will be much higher. Keep us posted on what Porsche NA says but I'm thinking they won't do much (I hope my feeling is wrong). Please posts all your costs with this repair to give us an idea of potential future costs on these cars if no additional warranty in place. Sorry to hear the bad news man.....

 

New clutch about 5k ago.

 

Too bad the RMS didn't show up at the same time. Almost all of the labor would have been taken care of with the new clutch.

 

only in 06-08 with the revised larger bearing. 05 and prior had the smaller bearing and can be extracted "easily" for retrofit. OP states he has an 04 build so IMS wouldnt require teardown.

 

No help from porsche.
Seems like the AOS failure sucked the rms out. So even though the seal had been changed with new clutch it didn't matter.
I'm out about 1300 at porsche for the aos.
They wanted to charge 1900 for rms but my Indy only is charging about 850. On a flat bed on it's way to Hergesheimer.

You might want to consider the IMS bearing retrofit while they're at it.

 

+1 When you have the labor done to replace the RMS you're only looking at incremental cost to upgrade the IMS with the LN Engineering kit. It's a no-brainer.

 

Double ouch . . . $1900 for RMS when they already have the car and done the AOS work is B.S. The LN Eng'ing IMS Kit is certainly the way to go. I've been told that in early 997 motors the IMS can be changed w/o breaking the motor apart. If so it reduces the labor cost significantly.

I've got an early build 2005 (Launch Car #337) so I'm following the thread w/ great interest. I about 23K miles w/ no issues. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
