Porsche returns to Le Mans in 2014 with an LMP1 for the overall win!

The German sports car manufacturer has won the French race a record 16 times but hasn't entered
in the top-tier category since Laurent Aiello, Stephane Ortelli and Allan McNish drove a Porsche 911
GTI to victory in 1998.
Porsche said Thursday it will develop a "completely new car" for the race that might include hybrid
technology if the rules allow.
Holy crap...
It's about time.
I enjoyed watching the Peugeot's superior performance, but the (sometimes slower) Audi's pull off the victory because of reliability AND performance.
The old saying - "You've got to first finish in order to finish first."

This is frigging awesome and about time! All eyes will be on Audi vs Porsche. I want Porsche to win.

Been discussing in another thread (https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/...ns-2014-a.html) how these two brands will compete. I tend to think this will be a Diesel v Hybrid competition, but part of me thinks that Audi might switch to one of the GT classes in order to provide VW with two brands each with a realistic chance of winning LeMans. Something tells me that Audi and Porsche won't compete in the same class...
It is still 3 years away. The rule makers and the powers that be at VW have plenty of time to figure things out. However, for sure only an overall victory for Porsche is acceptable and the VW bosses know this.
Having said that, I want to see more manufacturers compete in the top class. If you want to race at Le Mans, why not go for the BIG PRIZE!

Not a lot of manufacturers have that kind of capital to spend on the event. Let's face it, it ain't NASCAR or F-1. And while I am NOT trying to say NASCAR is a better measure of car/driver, I AM saying that it's more popular, and may offer a better return on the investment.
I view the 24hr of Le Mans as the racer's race. Only true enthusiasts know what it takes to compete at this level.
While the rest of our country salutes the 88 as he goes by in last place week after week.
