NAV in Porsche cars
NAV in Porsche cars
Does most of the members here think they need the NAV option installed in their porsche cars?
All of my cars have NAV but I hardly even use them. I may have a chance on getting a 911 with silver and red interior(my dream combination) but it does not have a NAV. The trade in for my P car is also super reasonable, that I would even earn alittle bit.
The only car I use the Navigation is the Range rover since I use it for long drives.
Anybody here who ordered theirs without navigation? I would appreciate your thoughts. Where you sorry you did not get Navigation.
For me the only thing indispensible in a car is BT, good sound system(BOSE or Harman) and a CD player.

i felt like u originally. However, the 997.2 tha i ordered mistakenly came with nav. Since it was my 4 porsche with the same salesman, he gave it to meat no additional cost. It is amazing!! best nav i ever used. Due for a new 911 in 2013, and definitley ordering it from the start.
Mine came with it but had I ordered the car I would have left it and the Bose off and got the full leather interior and a PSE. Don't use the nav that often and if I needed one I'd get a portable one for $100 or just use my smart phone. $2000 + is a stupid price to pay for directions a few times a year IMO.

I don't use the Nav too often because I haven't ever driven my 911 outside of and areas that I don't already know. But, by adding NAV, you upgrade the entire PCM unit in the 09+ cars to the touchscreen version, which also includes a some additional Sport Chrono functions (if SC is optioned). While I don't necessarily need the Nav, I MUCH prefer the touchscreen interface.
I guess most people would like to have it but most of us don't really use it.
I am one of those people. Something does not fit.
But like what the porsche ads says, " Not everything needs to be practical, otherwise, there won't be any PORSCHES."

I'd say the screen is too low to be useful as a Nav aid; My wife's 2010 Acura TL has a much more usable screen than my '09 997.2. I never pay attention to voice queues since I'm usually on the phone or listening to music, or have the top down.
Also, having to buy map updates is a joke (on either car) . I just use the built-in google maps on my iphone, easier to set bookmarks and type in addresses. It's also a consistent experience whether I travel and use a rental car, my truck or the P-car, or riding co-pilot in someone else's car.

I have NAV in my 997.1 and the only time I used it was to check whether my house is in the map.
Have not used it since. I'm sure when I need to use it, I may need to read the manual as I forgot what I did the first time.
I think I would get the car without NAV. I have 2 GPS which I use when I drive rental cars out of state, I can use them anyways.
Can't pass this good deal.
Thanks guys for your input.

My car has it. I use it sometimes on my weekend drives but I would not order it in a new car ( mine came with nav when I bought it off the lot). The OEM built-in units are somewhat better than the portables but I would buy a TomTom for $200 and stick it on the windshield.
If it is a 997.1, it is not worth it. That system's input is by the buttons (not touch screen). I purchased a used 997.1 and that was the only missing option - original owner decided to go without as he knew where he would be taking his baby. I have a Droid X and the nav is great on that so you have that option. Also, you can get a bluetooth headset. I considered getting the iPod & BT combps from mobridge, dension, navtv, etc...but I enjoy the driving experience and not too interested in the peripherals.
I didn't have nav on my old '08 Cayman, but it came on the '10 I just bought and I enjoy it. I travel a lot for work and there was something wrong about having a portable nav device mounted to the windshield in an expensive car. I would sometimes also use my phone, but it could be a pain trying to see the screen or input data on it while driving. However, for people who don't drive outside of familiar areas, I can see why it wouldn't be necessary. Especially at the cost.
