blown Shock Absorber

Good day forum members. I
Was just curious if anyone with a factory stock 997 ever blew a shock absorber....
I have an 05 C2S with 40k miles. Bone stock, and the front right shock went bad last night. And the crazy things is, I didn't even run over anything! How much would it be to replace? Would Porsche cover the bill even if I don't have warranty? Judt thought I would ask...

kind of a stupid question, but how do you know it's blown and not some other part/spring that is broken?

check the classifieds for guys who upgraded and are selling their OEM stuff. in the past i think i've seen all 4 OEM struts for (much) less than a thousand total so the front one shouldnt be too much at all. labor to install cant be much more than an hour and you'll need an alignment. $500 ballpark (if you find a used one) maybe?

and i seriously doubt PCNA will pick up the tab unless you can prove it's a manufac defect.

good luck

quick add on - now might be the time to jump on the slippery slope and upgrade the whole suspension!

I do not want to hiJack this thread, but can someone shed some light on upgrading suspension components.....What to upgrade, what is the advantage vs. disadvantage? I do not track my car and sport mode is way to stiff for daily driving. I am afraid any upgrade in suspension would mean stiff...

yep, suspension upgrades usu mean stiffer so if you dont track and you already dont like PASM sport mode, then why change anything? the stock suspension is fantastic as is for the street. the only thing i can see you doing is a spring change in order to lower the car/asthetics.

i upgraded to bilsteins which is probably the most "mild" crossover (track + street) upgrade there is and it is def a bit more stiff than stock. but hey, if youre looking for performance solutions, youre probably going to have to tolerate more discomfort on the street/bumpy roads.

my .02.

My friend's Boxster S blew a shock at an autocross. Also at 40K miles. You could tell it was shot by grabbing the top of the tire and trying to wiggle it. Maybe more than a "wiggle" (you needed to put your shoulders into it), but you could see some movement and a clunking noise. Oddly, I thought he got a partial warranty coverage from Bilstein..
I will have to ask him....

OK i feel like an idiot for asking, but What do the coilovers do? I'm not sure I understand your comment (probably because I have no idea what the coilovers do).

Nevermind I googled coilovers. But it seems that they will make the ride stiffer and as a DD I am not sure that is a good thing

If one of my shocks died, I'd be getting Bilstein PSS10 coilovers as my next move. Of course I got H&R springs first (since I just wanted a lower ride height), but I told my mechanic if I killed my shocks after a couple yrs, coilovers next!
