Dumb question regarding rear license plate bracket

I have a question which may seem stupid but for which I have no ready answer yet:

My 2006 C2S has the black plastic area on the rear bumper where you screw in the license plate. The screws which were used to hold the license plate (and the thin frame around the plate), appear to have worn out the relatively soft black plastic which holds them. I have lost one screw already and I can't tighten the other anymore, as that further degrades the raggy hole and diminishes the hold on the plate.

The question is this: how do I secure the plate? Do I try to move it left or right by an inch and drill new holes in the black plastic? Do I need a new black plastic bracket? If so, does anybody know the part number?

Is there another slution (expanding plastic tabs instead of metal screws or something). If so, any recommendations on brand/size, etc?

Thank you for any suggestions at this point, while my license plate lies in the passenger footwell

I've gone through 3 already in the last 6 years. The bracket is a cheap and stupid solution for mounting license plates. I wish they just had metal threaded inserts in the bracket like every other car. Everytime I take the plate and plate frame off to apply the registration decal the hole gets more stripped. I usually go up in size for the screws that attach the plate to the bracket to create a new thread. Once it gets too big I just order a new one from Suncoast. It's like 13.00 or something.

Thanks V35,
I looked at Suncoast parts and they only list a front plate bracket. Is that the one you ordered?

No, you'll have to email ryan or sales at Suncoast. It's not a listed part.

I used these 5 years ago & the plate has been fine since. Put the plastic molly in former screw holes then attach the plate to the molly with stainless steel screws. You can get these @ any hardware or home store.

Thank you for that. I was thinking along the same lines but unsure which ones would work best.

Thanks again!

I have also used these on my daughter's VW. You have to use a short neck version so you don't have any play. Of the three in the picture the one in the bottom is close but I still think you may have to go shorter.

This is just a thought but has anyone ever tried a spring? The threads strip due to too much applied torque. The thought occurs to me that if you place a spring through the screw body and then screw it in you may need far less torque to hold the bracket in place due to the outward vector force on the screw head. If it is the vibration that loosens the screw then this ought to prevent it.

Silverbullet911 is infamous around these parts
I also had to mount a plate frame back up camera. My solution was simple. Purchased plastic nuts and bolts, drilled holes through the black plastic holder and expoxied the nuts to the back of the plastic holder over the holes. Mounted plate and frame...done.

Thanks for all the responses.
I bought some white plastic expanding bolts/anchors, enlarged the screw holes in the back plate to accommodate the anchors and screwed the whole thing in with stainless steel screws.

I love this forum!

Try 3M outdoor double sided tape. It will not fall off. It will take someone 15 min to peel it off! I have it on the front for 2years no problem driving in rain 6 mo per year.
