my clutch is gone

for statistics sake - car has 54K miles on it now, last Friday i finally killed pressure plates when i launched it hard trying to pull out from traffic jam.
funny enough it was 1/2 mile away from home after i was going back from NHMS after full day at DE.

So now, new clutch job is $2K, it will be an OEM clutch, then as of 'peace of mind' mods RMS will be replaced, IMS retrofit from LN Eng. installed, motorsport AOS installed and finally TBD from Guards installed as they are currently still on sale and I want one. Plus mechanic says there are good chances car may need new flywheel, so it all makes pretty nice 'end of the season' mods list.

You have early type Ims bearing on your '06? Do you know this for sure? My understanding is that the later bearings cannot be replaced w/o opening engine up.

Wow! Mine hasn't been done yet, but I asked my old Indy mechanic how much it would cost and he quoted me in the neighborhood of $1K. I'm also going to get the IMS retrofit done at the same time.

$1K is labor alone which is about right. then there are parts. dealer quoted me $1850 for everything, i prefer to do it at my mechanic`s shop. I do not disagree that shop i use is probably a bit on an expensive side but i use his services a lot and very often for free and when i need it so it`s fine.

apparently it can be done. not sure how but he says it is possible.
there are 2 things - IMS upgrade ($895) and IMS retrofit ($519). second one does not need engine to be open. clear as mud, i know. it also may be he misunderstood what engine model i have. will see.
http://www.lnengineering.com/ims.html

i will go with what LN says - to treat this as a service item, car has 54K miles on it, so, it`s time. if it can be done without dropping off engine.

Ln's article says MY'06 Ims bearing is "not serviceable". This was my understanding. The options you mention are for 99-05 engines. If this proves not to be right please post that. The updated Ims bearing was done by Porsche on late 05's. The newer bearing cannot be removed w/o splitting the cases. This is only done after catastrophic failure. Good news is that with upgraded bearing you should not need to replace it. I have another thought. If RMS is not leaking you might choose to leave it alone. "If it is not broken....." The replacement of rms with clutch is usually done only if there is a leak.

I just spoke with mechanic - it is correct, late MY06 bigger bearings cannot be extracted. So we will see what version I have got when tranny will be dropped.

consider getting your flywheel looked at too, maybe do that at the same time..a lot of people get the Aaasco light single mass flywheel.

I just had mine recently go as well, clutch + flywheel, all oem for a discount $4k GRRRRRRR

Now is the no-brainer time to add the LWFW. You will really enjoy it. I've done just about every mod there is, and other than an Supercharger, the LWFW is the best performance mod you can make. It doesn't add crank HP, but it bumps up wheel HP quite nicely, as less energy is lost spinning the very heavy OEM dual-mass unit.

Good choices . I agree with you sticking to OEM for this .

I believe there were a few M96 crankshaft failures which may have been related to a LWF. However, I haven't heard of one on an M97? Flat Six has an article on their site.

I'll be taking a hard look at an LWF when my clutch goes. I had one in my 964 and it was great

upgraded stage 2 or 2.5 would be about 3k installed. Do this if your going to mod down the road.

i do not want it in my car. it may be just fine or it may end up with a broken crankshaft depending of how good your engine was balanced at the factory. plus i do not want stage 2 or stage 3 sprung suspended
clutch in my car, i want stock OEM smoothness for street driving.

to use LWFW one needs to get gt3 rs car and build it up for track only use, that is where all this stuff works as designed. street C2 or C2S is fine with amount of power it got stock after you fix issues with stock torque curves issues (where it drops down about of 5.5K rpm). i can pass drivers in turbos and gt3 cars in lower run groups on a track now just fine, in advanced group a spec miata car can pass me in the corner as those drivers have much more experience than i do so it does not matter.
when i`ll hit power limitation factor i will buy a new car - gt3 rs or cup. this car is as good as it gets, i just want to put some 'service mods' in to help it to live a bit longer as it is.
