Highway 154
Highway 154
Hey guys,
Wanted to share with you the stuff 911 dreams are made of. Highway 154 on the way to Lake Cachuma in Southern California. I was meeting friends and family at the Campground. I was lucky enough to be driving alone, and took full pleasure all through the coast of Santa Barbara with the mountains rising up around me, and the sparkling coast below the cliffs... and I was driving a nice 80 mph... 'respectfully weaving' faster and faster through real light 'traffic' on a Sunday morning. It all made me feel like I was in a Porsche commercial, my very own. I was driving my first and only Porsche, an 06 997S black on black. From day one, the car has been a dream car, and today was no different. Man, the feeling of a Thing Well Made. But it got so much better as I launched onto a great highway I didn't even know existed. The 154. Oh, it was made for just such a drive--and there was almost no one else on the road! It was a Dream! I was driving in 2nd and 3rd a lot--and revving around 5-6, not crazy, but very engaged, deeply engaged! Driving uphill. The engine then did something new to my ears. It made music only an engine can make--it was the music I have read about in magazines. It was when I let OFF the throttle a bit... the engine behind me started turning a rumble around in it's magnificent confines... SOUND! AAAAHHHHHH!!!! Turning this rumble around. You my brothers know this sound. All I can say friends, is I continue to be in awe of how ghostly alive this car really is. This car continues to feel like one of those very few things that ARE what they claim to be. You can hear it. You are in the vibration of this car. I was blown away at a level I have not reached until this drive. I got to that campsite with a big smile on my face. And then, the black Porsche was going 10 mph on dusty asphalt, burbling through the campsite... against the all natural background of lake and trees... man a 911 looks good in a campground.

Hwy 154 is also a great shortcut that takes maybe 12 miles off the journey up Hwy 101.
In case you're not familiar with it, another great highway in our region is Hwy 2 from La Canada, which re-opened this year, and is currently open all the way to Wrightwood. Also feels like you're living the ideal (which is why it feels like you're in a commercial). I drive up the 2 to 7,000 feet (Mt. Waterman), throw on my boots and go hiking -- combining two awesome activities in one 5 hr trip.

Thanks guys for replies
I don't get to take the car out enough, so when I do, I really relish it! I wish I could drive the 911 every day but maybe it wouldn't be so amazing if I did. Don't really want to sit in traffic in it! Anyway, thanks for indulging me in this post... I was high as hell on that drive when I wrote it! Thanks also for more good highways to drive on!
