cold starts

Hey fellas - Pcar was in the garage for 8 days and then started up this morning. Took 4 turns of the key to crank it over and the plume of smoke and lifter noise was worrisome. But after 2-3 minutes, it quieted down...

Is this typical after the car has been sitting? Is it due to oil completely draining and thus very loud lifter noise? Can someone explain what is happening?

What do you do when away for 1week+? have a neighbor crank it up once or so?

thanks

Strange... my car can sit for a few weeks and startup with no problems. Curious to hear what you find. Maybe a trip to the dealer?

emailed service -said it is OK, not uncommon, and if sitting a week+ and given the 30 degree temp this am. He said consider getting a trickle charging device (cig lighter to outlet in garage).

By 4 turns of the key do you mean 4 separate starting cycles? If that's the case, I've never had that happen in cold weather. If it sounded like your starter was straining then the battery maintainer recommendation was a good one.
