I have PDK and I love it from every perspective. Its Great in Seattle traffic, Its phenominal on the track (sport plus mode), its amazing on the speed of shifts on entrance ramps. I would buy one again.

However, the problem is I let the transmission decide on the shifting....I get lazy and frankly the transmission shifts so optimally I just stopped trying to do it myself in manual mode. THis is the reason I am not looking for a 996 with manual for the track....I just want to get a bit more involved with the driving.... So the bottom line for me, if its an all around Daily driver and track car....PDK all the way. On the other hand, for a track only car where you are not looking to win a race....my gut tells me manual for a more visceral experience. Again....this is my opinion and I agree with the rest that its all preference.

Remember that Porsche developed the PDK back in the 70's to be faster, it can't
be dismissed out of hand. I am now a believer...oh and the new RSR is paddle-shift, F1 uses paddle-shift. PDK just automates the process and I have found is faster than me in making decisions on the track. It has allowed me to focus on inputs and braking.

Question: on the 991 manual, isn't it just the PDK with linkage to a manual shifter?

I spent months looking for a manual and finally found the one I wanted. While I was looking, my local Porsche rep suggested I drive a PDK. I drove it and was very impressed. I purchased the manual and now wish I would have bought the PDK. Please keep in mind that I figured a Porsche was not a Porsche unless there was a stick on the floor. I felt there were more driving style options with the PDK. The car went from soft to hard with a push of a button.

Probably best not to regret your decision. Each has its strengths, and if you had gotten the PDK you might now be wishing you had gotten a manual (grass is greener sort of thing). I suggest enjoying your manual and you can always try PDK next time.

You are very wise. I agree with you. I had to have a manual Porsche at least once in my life. It won't be long before everything is PDK/Manual and I will have wished I had a manual. I love my car and would probably make the same decision if I had it to do all over again. I just believe the next one will be a PDK.

Golf,

You can get the same effort of soft Vs. hard with a manual and PASM.

Does your car have this?

Yes, I have a 2009 911 C4S Coupe w/ Sport. I love the Sport feature. What I was attempting to convey was that the transmission gave an extra mode; very soft and gentle, solid and quick, and flat out beast mode. On the test drive I put the car in soft mode and drove into a small town with many stop signs. The ride was soft and the transmission shift was as soft. When I got out to the country I found the transmission was a little quicker and anticipated the next gear. When I had the sport on and paddle operational, the car was a beast. I drove a 2S with TIP and did not enjoy the car at all. I anticipated a small improvement in the PDK and was shocked at the experience. I realize I wasn't very technical on this post but I'm attempting to convey my feelings and that is hard to do when talking about a Porsche.

I got it now...you explained it perfectly.

My advice is try to get your manual to behave similarly. Learn to take off smooth or hard as you wish. Learn to make ever shift smooth, especially down-shifting with heel-toeing. Shift such that you don't even know you shifted and the car remains balanced.

We can not shift as quick as the computer in the PDK; but its doesn't mean we cant refine as skills to get as close as possible and there is allot of personal satisfaction in that.

had a deal put together on a 6 speed GTS but it fell apart last minute

I am not why your deal fell out but Since you had already decided on a 6 speed. I would go with your first choice.

Oh no! Not again.

Drive a PDK car and drive a manual car (same type car). Try a long test drive and decide.
