Upgrading Nav / Bluetooth / Radio Head Unit- '05 997

I am currently looking into upgrading the head unit in my '05 S Cab. I have talkled to a couple of shops and they reccomend this head unit that was made for the 997 in mind-

http://www.crutchfield.com/p_130AVIC....html?tp=20212

I have a price of $1400 installed- seems a little high but that includes the silver template that matches my car...Has anyone done this?

I love the idea of having a nav system that actually works- not to mention the Bluetooth...

Thanks-
SD

That is a decent unit that you have selected. Is your car fiber optic? I know many of the 997's we've done have been fiber optic in which case you cannot just change the radio, you need to change the speakers as well. I would confirm that with your local shop.

I put a similar AVIC system in my Jeep and it's fantastic. I may have to do the same with the 997.

I know my car assembled in December '04 - but they will have to verify the fiber optic issue when they open it up. New Speakers? Figure another $1500 if we are including the sub woofer....

Sorry, let me correct myself, you will need new amplifiers because the aftermarket unit cannot trigger on the OEM Porsche amplifiers (depending on the system you have). I meant to say that most of our customers that end up changing the head unit and amplifiers end up doing speakers as well. Any shop should be able to tell within a few minutes if you car is fiber optic just by removing the radio from the dash.

Got it. My shop already told me I needed a new amp- maybe that is why it is $1400 installed....I am fine with that- did not want to spend $3k on this mod- I basically just want my BT to work well- right now I have Tooki and it is rather inconsistent.

I appreciate the help.
