You probably should find out the offsets and compare to the 997 NB offsets - best to do the due diligence yourself, then you won't be disappointed.

I think 996 WB are 50mm up front and 45mm in the back

My 997 WB is 57mm in the front and 51mm in the back

I am pretty sure the 997 NB is 57mm in the front and 67mm in the back.

That would mean the wheel would stick out an additional 22mm or almost an inch. My guess is that is way too much and will cause rubbing. The most agressive I have seen is a 14-17mm change.

Is the 996 WB wheel 11" wide like the 9997s? I run wide body wheels and 5mm spacers on the rear of my 997 C2S with no rubbing. I'm at an effective ET46 with 295s...aggressive for sure and sticks out ever so slightly. I'll try to find pics and post them. Many people asked what I changed on the car when I put 5mm spacers because it looked "meaner". I tried 7mm spacers and I took them off instantly...incredible what 2mm did.

So that means you have moved out your wheels 21 mm...and 23mm was a problem...that indicates that the OP maybe having the same problem at 22mm

23mm was only a visual problem for me. It reminded me of 70s muscle cars and low riders with the wheels sticking out...obviously I'm exaggerating but as I said, unreal how 2mm made a difference.

I don't have any pics from behind and I won't be able to take any since the car is in storage.

I found a set of Avant Garde's in a WB fitment. The front is 19x8.5 +45 and rear in 19x11 +40. I found out the fitment on the NB 997 is +52, can i run the +40 without rubbing? If i need spacers, what size would i need?

Why would you need spacers - they only push the wheels out farther. Go here and you'll find some good information offsets and what happens when you increase/decrease:
