06' 997S Oil Seperator Replacement
I started mine the other day after not driving it for a week, a little white smoke came out of the exhaust for a few seconds - is that normal or does it mean teh aos is failing? How can I check to be sure?
Ok, Just want to confirm this interesting AOS whining sound when it is really ready to be replaced. As I mentioned above, I was getting this loud squealing/whining sound. Sounded exactly like a belt beginning to slip when the car was at idle. I knew the AOS was going bad... I just want to confirm that after replacing the AOS that the sound is gone now. So apparently the AOS can make this sound when it is going bad... good to know.
I found this thread to be very informative. Thanks

There is a difference between a "little" white smoke and a "plume" of smoke like a coal train chugging down the tracks!

If you are embarrassed to be seen in your car with the amount of smoke that comes out on start ups... now your getting the picture.... AOS is probably on its way out.
There is a way to test this. The techs check this by removing the the oil cap slowly while the car is running... If you hear a loud sucking sound coming from the oil cap as its removed and then the idling of the car drops... then that means the AOS and crank case is backed up with oil, creating a strong vacuum, and oil is not getting circulated properly.
This video will explain it too...
