06' 997S Oil Seperator Replacement

5 miles from my house I begin to hear a whining sound come from the motor. At 1st, thought it was a maybe a belt, possible a pulley, etc. On the 997, I think it's rational to suspect that. I pulled over to the side of the road and shut the car down. I started the car up again and all was fine, for another 3 miles. No whine or anything. 2miles from my house the whine is back with severe clouds of white smoke from the exhaust. The engine light comes on and I immediately pull over to prevent any additional damage. Took the car to the mechanic and it was a cracked oil separator! I expected that to happen in a boxter or cayman, but it's my understanding that cracked oil separators are rare in the 997's. Thoughts?

I was told aos must be replaced like every 30k miles and definitely every time you drop off gearbox. They do fail. If you get motorsports version (close to $800) it should be better.

Does anybody please have a Porsche part number for both AOS, normal one and the motorsport version?

nah, from what ive heard/read, it seems just like all the other known issues (that porsche wont admit), like IMS, RMS, etc: some people run into problems, most don't, and often with no rhyme or reason as to the disparity between the two.

i have 45k on my '06S, incl ~6k track miles, and i have not had issues that others have had (e.g. electrical, tranny/gears, engine) but HAVE had my share (shift cables, pedal potentiometer, clutch). i've learned that it's mostly a crapshoot with these damn german cars!

cracked AOS sounds like someone was fooling around in the engine bay and broke it - maybe even your mechanic that was checking it out. AOS was probably failing, and your mechanic broke it.

This is coming from someone who has replaced the AOS, starter, alternator/starter cable, driver belt, distro pipe on my car, and the AOS is right there in the way of everything, and made of **** plastic.

Ya Mine Just Died

....56k miles on my C2S, got the insane plumes of white smoke on Friday night, about a mile before arriving home, luckily.

Interestingly, the symptoms were similar, if not the same, to when my water pump took a dump back in April. The white smoke only came out after acceleration from a red light, or from being in Park and then accelerating, but didnt from just general driving (already acquired momentum).

Luckily, still under certified warranty

Quick question:
I'm interested in a 2009 or 2010 GT3. In purely stock form, do those models come with this issue. Do they have any known issues that occur over/over, etc.? I presume not, but figured I would ask any long-term recent owners. I love my C2S, but test drove a GT3 and love its rawness and rev-range - its got an insane personality. I REALLY want to investigate it before I take the plunge. Intentions: daily driver 90%, autocross 10%.

Cheers

I know my air oil separator is in desparate need of replacement. After spirited driving and parking the car I started to get smoke from the exhaust the next time it was started. I also started to hear a squeeling/whining sound that I thought for sure was the serpentine belt. Very subtle sound/whining at first as I would come to a stop in traffic. I replaced the belt and put an order in for a new aos. I went to a track day and the aos separator is really on its last days. While I am waiting for aos to arrive in mail I went for a spirited drive yesterday and the squealing sound has increased to a point where i thought it was a whining belt sound coming from another car! The sound only comes when idling at a stop. Goes away when accellerating. I really hope this is just the aos. I am taking it in to have it replaced this week. Let me know if you have had any other whining or squealing issues after the aos was replaced. Thanks!

Ok, Just want to confirm this interesting AOS whining sound when it is really ready to be replaced. As I mentioned above, I was getting this loud squealing/whining sound. Sounded exactly like a belt beginning to slip when the car was at idle. I knew the AOS was going bad... I just want to confirm that after replacing the AOS that the sound is gone now. So apparently the AOS can make this sound when it is going bad... good to know.

Well Gents,

I am waiting for the flatbed at this minute. Looks like I have an AOS issue --- white smoke all over the place. Grrrrr!

I already ordered the part but it looks like arrival is next Tuesday

After 60k miles, my first inconvenience. I guess I shouldn't complain.

Not on the major maintenance check list anywhere, regardless of mileage, for any 997.1 models '05 thru '08. Would bet it's the same for all models just got tired of reading the schedules. So not sure where the poster heard about the recommendation just know it wasn't Porsche.

So did your check engine light come on?? I drove my car several weeks when I first noticed the white smoke. it only lasted for about 10-20 seconds on cold start ups, but would clear out after that and car was fine to drive. Smoke would not show up for a few days. But when it did it was usually at start up after car had been sitting for a few hours. Some times smoke would come back at start ups really bad after a spirited drive through canyons or taking lots of fast corners.

For those wondering about maintenance schedule... I wouldn't pay so much attention to that because some get 50-60k miles without needing it and others have to do it closer to 30k miles. Just know when you see lots of white smoke after a cold start up... then its getting time to swap it out

No CEL.

I was driving around and noticed that my engine has intermittent slight jerks in first year. After 20 miles, I made a quick u-turn and the oil logo appeared momentarily. I stopped the car and waited about 10 minutes and when I started the car white smoke was coming out if the exhaust.

The electronic gauge appears to be screwed up now. Once it showed 1 at low; once it showed full.

Interestingly when the tow truck showed, no white smoke. No white smoke was also present when I dismounted the flatbed and onto my garage.
