steering wheel question

I purchased a thick Porsche steering wheel from this site. My steering wheel has the multifunction controls. The wheel I purchased does not. Can I take off the multi-function controls and put them on the thicker steering wheel? Can I use my current airbag? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

There are two Porsche wheels, ones with triangular airbags and ones with round ones. They are not interchangable. If you have the triangular wheel with the controls, you can easily swap out the control trim and put it on another wheel. You'll need a torx wrench and it's a snap.

Wow . . . These are questions you should have asked before buying the wheel. That said I suspect your existing wheel has the triangle air bag since I believe only that configuration offers multi-functional controls. If your new wheel is the 'triangle' configuration I suspect everything can be transferred to it. I know that is the case w/ the 'round' airbag 'Sport steering wheel.

Hopefully someone will chime in that has done that conversion.

Its more complex than that.
There is the older 997.1 steering wheels: triangular and round (think and thin share the same center parts/airbag)

There is the newer steering wheels (MY2010+?) (the early run 997.2's from 2008, 2009 may not have come with them): triangular and round.

The old round is not the same as the new round. The new round and wheel insert is different (old had the horn be the surround ring around the airbag, the new design has a smaller diameter airbag and has the airbag be the horn button).

So you cannot put the new style multifunction inserts into the old style wheel I suspect. You need the multifunction solution that fits your generation of steering wheel.

I don't think there is a multi-function solution for the old style round sports airbag wheel (or thicker sports wheel) with 6spd, but there may have been for that generation's automatic gearbox options.

There is a multi-function solution for the new style round sports wheels with manual and PDK gearboxes.

I had the old style 997.1 generation thicker sports wheel on my car, a MY09 997.2 with 6spd manual. I searched for options for a while, and in the end found that if I wanted to get multifunction it was going to be with the upgrade to heated wheel as well (which wasn't offered either for my 2009MY order).
