CPO Pro-rated refund?

Hi guys, my 997 is up on the block, and I had a potential buyer ask me an interesting question. My car is CPO through December of this year, and he wants to know if he could "refund" the warranty to Porsche and get a pro-rated refund. I told him that I suspect the answer is no, but I told him I'd check. What do you guys think?

I'll call Porsche tomorrow, but I wanted to ask here too just in case anyone had done this. Thanks!

I've never heard of a pro-rated CPO.

Porsche......refund money?

I don't think there is any chance of a parallel universe where this might possibly occur.

You do know that the CPO warranty is transferable, right? why wouldn't the new owner want the CPO warranty?

I cancelled my 3rd party warranty and got a refund, don't think a CPO would do that

Call off the lynch mob guys - it's definitely not something I would do, and I told him it's probably not possible anyway. His rationale was that once he checks the car out and has it for a few weeks, he'd rather have the money in his pocket.

If the answer had been yes, we would likely have suffered a tear in the space time continuum. Clocks would have runs backwards. Dogs would be befriending cats. Doomsday would be on the horizon. All of this before I've had a chance to prepare!

Thanks for checking just the same. I can sleep better knowing I still have time.

Not so sure, seriously. We scoff at the notion, but if there is 2 full years to run on the CPO, why wouldn't Porsche give you a couple hundred bucks to get out of it? If you think you're going to get $1500 for the $2000 warranty, you're crazy, but I'm sure it would be worth a few hundred to them anyway. I'm sure they statistically pay claims of several hundred dollars on all their CPO warranties. Why not get out of that liability? The fundamental conclusion is that the amount you get back is far less than the real value of the warranty, so you'd be pretty stupid to "cash out".

Hey guys you're knocking to believe this. I just picked up a used Panamera 2014Turbo S executive and this same question came up in conversation.

I asked this question to the dealer for the purposes of: "What happens if I totaled the car and still have a bunch of years left of the CPO or Extended warranty?" I was told that they would refund the difference in the prorated way. I asked further about the way the proration would actually work. They said it wouldn't be too far off from time of coverage divided by total cost.

They asked if I want to buy the entire coverage that would cover the cost of replacing the tires or Rims in the event And I'm getting road rash / tire damage or a dent. I went with the long-term plan and asked him what happens if I either total or sell the car and end up not getting to use the entire portion of the insurance. The story was the same.

They told me that the coverage could go to the next buyer as long as it went to a private purchaser. The dealer also told me that they'd refund the unused portion of the insurance. They did also state that I couldn't sell this coverage to another dealer that wasn't a Porsche outlet.

Think about it, if you were to cancel your insurance policy, legally, the money must be returned. It seems crazier that the cash wouldn't be returned when there was no product timeframe received. In this case, insurance. The dealer is able to get money back from Porsche if the car is off the road, and there's no longer a liability. Another thought, if the car is in an accident, the liability increases that other probems will arise, so, it's in the companies best interest to return the money and reduce the liability of a car that might need more than typical servicing. But of course, as everyone as rightly stated, you'd be nuts to keep this car without any warranty. Just too risky if something were to go - the parts alone are insane!

You sure you want to sell your car to this guy? He seems like a piece of work.

The warranty expires in about 4 months and the potential buyer believes he might get enough money back to make a difference? If his budget is that tight he should be looking at Honda Civics......
