Tips on buying 997 S

Thanks for any responses in advance! I'm new to this forum. I am looking at purchasing my first Porsche. Two cars in mind, an 07 911 S and an 08 911 s.

08, white, two owners, 33K miles. Has had exterior keyed up (repo') and repainted. Has oem rims painted black. Still under factory warranty. Carfax reports it had clutch\driveshaftseal\front crankshaft seal\flexplate replaced at 22k miles.

07, seal gray, one owner, 25K miles, int. and ext. seem to be in great condition. No factory warranty.

While it seems a preowned with a factory warranty might be a better option, I'm worried that the carfax report is describing an IMS bearing issue on this 08 vehicle.

I'm going to look at the 08 this afternoon and test drive the 07 this evening.

I'm looking for any advise from you guys\gals. Other than a PPI, what are some of the things I can evaluate myself? Am I being overly cautious on the bearing issue? Should I run away from the 08?

Thanks everyone!

I would take the '07 first... But I am partial to Seal Gray.

Joking aside, I would also be worried by the Carfax on the '08, this looks very much like the aftermath of an IMS failure. The problem with a car that has the IMS changed is that you do not know if it was a preventive maintenance measure or if it was corrective without talking to the owner or mechanic firsthand. If it was done after the fact, you just don't know if the engine has sustained any other damage...

Since the 07 has lower mileage, has had only one owner, did not get keyed and repainted, and has a clean bill of health, it does looks like a better car to me...

AFAIK, there really wasn't any important improvements between '07 and '08, IIRW, the IMS design was changed in mid-'06.

Make sure you get a DME scan w/overrevs and a good PPI to check on that IMS...

Hope this helps and good luck,

T.

Looked at that white one, had it PPIed before I knew how storied it is (seller was dishonest!). Autocheck shows frame damage - be careful. There was another person on here who looked at it and passed, you can find my posts on his thread. The seller is as crooked as they come.. I wouldnt buy a GOOD car from him, nevertheless a storied one.

Consider a 2009 C2S with PDK unless you prefer manual. Not sure what your budget is, but the PDk is a big improvement over the tiptronic. I personally prefer getting a CPO car from the Porsche dealer, but it would cost a bit more. I just picked up a 1 owner, C2S w/ Sport Chrono car with 24k miles with CPO for $72k--originally sold by same dealer for 111k. Just food for thought.

thanks..

I saw those posts about the 08. Same car. Didn't even bother to look. Appreciate the heads up guys.

I did see the 07. Nice car. Few paint and other minor interior issues. Easily addressable. Just the warranty issue. The PPI and DME are musts. Broker offered a drivetrain warranty through a 3rd party but admittingly is new to using them.

My gut instinct is to wait and look for another since it's 5 years old already. But part of me thinks I can put aside the difference in cost from an 09 and use it for maintenance/repairs.

Damn over-analysis!

50 != 72.. thats quite a stretch. but there are 09's cropping up in the high 50's which after negotiations might be doable for a person looking to spend 50

thanks guys

Went through a spectrum of cars. The 997 S was going to be for the wife. I didn't think she needed all out power so we didn't look into the turbos. We ended up test driving a mini cooper s, 370 z, g37s, 335i. I know, I know, very different cars.

Ended up with the 335i, fulfilled multiple categories. Happy with choice so far. CPO from BMW, pretty substantial warranty. And suprisingly sporty. So that leaves me up to bat next :-)

Going to look into the 997's again. I'll take my time this go round. Maybe within the year. I'll start a different thread. If I do this, I'll get a turbo
