I believe it depends on what year your car is and if the PSE was factory installed. If you car (ie. 997.1 and maybe 997.2) was for the German marketplace then the PSE is controlled by the DME.

German 'noise' laws require that the exhaust sound be attenuated when driving at or below a certain speed (ie. driving through cities). I don't know the absolute details but in essense that was the factory implementation scheme to meet German laws.

Of course it can always be defeated so it is in the 'loud' state all the time or a manual switch can be installed so the driver can select either 'loud' or 'quiet' depending on the situation.

If I'm wrong or off-base someone for sure will chime in and correct me.

You might just have to pull the power connector to the 'bypass' solenoid or disable the vacuum lines to the muffler valves. You'll need to of course plug the vacuum line to avoid a vacuum leak. Do a search on the various Porsche forums for the precise details. It's been written about many times.

ok, been driving around seeing what i could see, and it seems with the foot hard on it something closes, like a vacuum operated valve maybe and the exhaust is quiet, and when i throttle up slowly it stays open and sounds better, so i have to find what to disable to keep it open,
