Assistance is needed... potential 997 purchase
Hello all.
This is my first post and first time buying a Porsche.
I have located a car that seems to suit me and want to know what if anything I should look out for. The car is a CPO'd 2005 C2 6MT with 43,XXX and sport chrono. It looks pretty good in pictures and Ive talked to the owner about it and feel decent about those conversations but as I said, this is my first Porsche and I want the experience to be all I have dreamt of since I saw my first 911.
I drove a new 991 S pdk today and really liked it, but I think it may be a little more refined than I want.
I dont generally like to open by seeking assistance, but time is somewhat of the essence on this. I appreciate any guidance and look forward to reciprocating in the future.

Hello. Many begin with requests while looking. The first thing I wild ascertain is whether the CPO transfers to a new driver. It should if you pay for the transfer, but check. Secondly I would have it inspected foe fluids, brakes, clutch and leaks. The CPO even if it transfers, it may not cover these expensive wear and tear items. Then if it suits you, jump in and drive. You'll be hooked quickly.
in a private sale the CPO transfers but when does the CPO warranty end.
You will hear here that the 05 997 is more porne to IMS issues, so the warranty is very important. You can search to learn more about the IMS issue if you don't know about it already.
Get a PPI with DME read-out (pre purchase inspection)
Also Service records if possible.
Good luck

What are they asking for the car? How much of the CPO warranty is left?
The CPO transfer is easy, there is a postcard to fill out in the back of the CPO book with the new owners info.
If I was buying an 05 I'd go ahead and budget for the IMS retrofit. I don't actually know what the probability of there ever being a problem is but with all the talk about IMS's on here I'd have to do it or risk worrying myself to death. (I see old boxters and 996's driving around all the time so maybe it's not as big a deal as everyone makes it)

they are asking low 40s and the warranty has 6 months left on it.
i just read a bunch about IMS and it scares the crap out of me. i can see picking it up, bringing it home, properly detailing it and then grenading the engine the first weekend i take it out.

If you're not comfortable with the diminutive odds that you may have an IMS failure, don't buy the car. If you want assurance, buy an extended warranty and drive in peace.

For me the price would have to be right.
Just for comparison I just picked up my car 2 weeks ago. It's an 06 C2S, it's MSRP was probably high 80's almost 90K (I don't know for sure) but it's got some nice options. It had just under 25K miles on it when I got it but has no warranty. My dealer buddy says that my car would bring $43K at auction and I didn't pay much more that that for it.
There is a dealer around here that has been trying to sell a 05 launch edition for with 25K miles for 50K for the last 6 months. A highly optioned car for sure but that shows the market.

Low 40's can get you in 06 territory, and less chance of IMS failure.

My two euros on the IMS issue: I have an early 997.1 that I bought with 19K miles and now has 74K. At about 15K miles driven each year it's as much of a daily driver as New England weather will allow. At the time it was coming off its CPO warranty (last spring) I spoke to my dealer service manager about the likelihood of IMS failure. While they could obviously offer no guarantee (and, it's worth noting, they didn't even try to sell me an extended warranty), he said that in the literally hundreds of 997.1s they had seen and serviced, only 4 had ever had the IMS fail. And all of those failures were in cars with under 30K miles.
In other words, whether one worries about it is more dependent on your own attitude and outlook than reasonable probability.

Ask the owner if he has the service records. Then with them in hand ask if he had the IMS retro fit and have him show you the receipt. The IMS issue, solely from what I've read on these boards, appears to be a first half on '05 997 issue. Three good news things for you and this car if you can get it cheap: 1) while catastrophic, the IMS is supposedly extremely rare, like Russian roulette with a gun that has 100 bullet chamber; 2) it can be fixed easily, you can't replace later models without breaking open the block; 3) the seller will know this and should adjust that into the price.
Like the other guy said say $37M if the IMS has been replaced and he can show you the paperwork, $35M if it hasn't. All he can do is say no and have to come back to you after you graciously thank him and leave him your card.

IMS is a big deal. This is reason I picked up 997.2. I had Boxster which is 987S and I had IMS failure at 22k miles. CPO covered it which may have cost me $18k if I didn't have a warranty. I heard IMS is rare but I wouldn't buy any car without warranty unless it has driven daily and high miles. Get it check out by local Porsche dealer. Good luck!
