Ready to pull trigger on 07 C4S

Hi,

I'm a bit nervous about this purchase. The car: 2007 C4S Black/Black Nav.

the nervous part is that i'll be dropping 58k on a car with NO Warranty.

That said this will be a daily driver @ 10k yr.

I saw a post about the 3.8's blowing up with different engine generations M96/7. should I just skip this generation and look for a 997.2?

To be honest this this a high dollar puchase for me and not having a feel good warrany to wrap myself in while i'm making 1k payments on it is unsettling.

What is the general consensus of the 07 C4S.

Here's alink to the car. http://sfbay.craigslist.org/pen/ctd/3158668007.html

Low miles is attractive, rear tires are worn a bit. No way to know if it was tracked.

I appreciate any feedback you may have.

Thanks,

I bought a 4 year warranty for my 997.1. I have already used it to have the alternator cable replaced. What really worries me is the sparkplug replacement coming up.

You should be able to negotiate from the asking price, at least 2-3k, which will buy you a good aftermarket warranty for a good amount of time and mileage, or try to build it into the deal, if they offer a good warranty product.

The dealer sounds a bit tapped out. He says he's in it for 55k. Not alot of wiggle room. It may not be the car for me afterall but trying to get a warranty in the deal is definitely a good idea. Thanks for the suggestions. Keep em coming.

Super adjuster, which warranty company did you choose?

after reading a post 10 pages deep regarding a "money shift" i think i'm gonna skip this one and look for an 09 with pdk.

While i've never had anything close to a money shift with the following cars I don't want to chance it on my dream car.

01 bmw z3 coupe, 02 BMW 540i 6speed, 07 Porsche Cayman S.

interesting - you've owned these type of cars with manual transmissions and you're seriously worried about money shifts?

I suggest you drive a PDK (and not just around the block). I did, in fact I had one for a few hours ... ton of fun at the beginning, but the fun does end quickly. Had the same experience with my GTI (owned both manual and DSG), as well as with my C63 (ok, not double clutch, but still...)

IMO, nothing beats a manual transmission on performance cars, but that's personal preference, of course. However, if that's been your preference so far, make sure to test drive the PDK extensively.

Good luck and have fun on your search for your dream car!

Don't be afraid to jump into the deep end of the pool

I bought a 2007 C4S with 11K back in November. Previously I owned a Honda S2000. As much as I loved that Honda, nothing compares to the C4S. I paid $60K (full leather, sport chrono, etc) from a non-dealer. I had the car inspected by a Porsche dealler and it passed with flying colors. I didn't get a warranty. I've put 3,000 miles on the car since I bought it and haven't had any trouble at all. Buying a warranty makes sense if you can't afford a surprise $5K repair. I chose to spend the money I would have spent on the warranty, on a car with lower mileage instead. So far it has been a good choice.

I do wish I had purchased a 997.2 but only because of bluetooth and built-in satelite radio. I hate the idea of a phone pad on my 997.1 that doesn't actually dial phone numbers. Only Porsche could sell a $100K to a US market and get away with a phone pad with "bottons to nowhere"! But the car is SO freaking fun to drive that I wouldn't care if I didn't have air conditioning or power windows or anything else of a creature-comfort nature.

Don't over-think it. Have the car inspected by a pro, and if it passes, buy the car and enjoy the hell out of it.

I purchased a 2007 targa 4s two years ago. Only problem I've had was the starter. We drove it 8k miles across country with no issues. Honestly I think folks really over think purchases of these cars. Get a PPI and go from there. Then again, I do understand it's a pile of money. Good luck hope things work out for you.

I would get the PPI and DME read on it, but if you are that stretched, I would really consider the extended warranty, or just waiting for a good CPO example to pop up. This one seems a bit high priced to me, so I would take a breath and really think it through.

Good luck with it!

thanks for the advice guys. I attempted a trigger pull today on an O8 cpo, carrera, Tip, nav, std leather, power seats, heated seats, bluetooth. 18k miles $58k.

Unfortunately dealer played the we're not making 1cent on this car at this price and we can only lowball you on your trade. The whole we can buy this car at wholesale for a quarter bit. Of course they say that but if they could there'd be one on thier lot already. I chose to walk. I have a super clean BMW 525i auto, nav, xenon, Sport and premium packages, brand spankin new michelin pilot sport run flats. 64k miles, metallic black on black leather and they offered me 15k for it. I've had an independent dealer offer me 20.5 for it so i walked. I'll just wait it out.

These guys wanna take you on both sides of the deal. I'm not that in love with the car to take a beating on my bmw.

In any case, my strong advice is: don't trade your car, but sell it private - it's a strong market for used cars. You will pay high dollars for any used car in this market, so make sure you're making high dollars on the sale of yours.

That said, I'm surprised a dealer offered you over 20k for a 525i with 64k miles ... that's a great trade-in offer IMO. I assume it's an 06 or 07?

Did a nationwide search on available '07-'08 C4S cars with less than 30 K miles. Found 20 coupes and 3 cabs. Both of the cars below $ 63 K had been in collisions involving the front or rear end (or both) of the car.
Good cars are listed as high as $79 K, majority were above $70 K. While this may not be the entire universe of cars available I suspect anything below the mid $60 k mark may have issues you want to avoid, warranty or no.

That is totally correct and here's where the market is stupid. I've seen 2011 GTS's listed in the low 90's. Maybe these cars can be had for 89k. Base 2011's are in the 70's. The price is high for the '07-08 cars because there were few made. I think there were a LOT more 2011's made and people are trading in a lot of them for 991's. That's the sweet spot in the used Porsche market. Initial outlay will be more, but cost of ownership for 3 years looks like it's going to be a whole lot better buying an '11 than an '07 or '08. Crap, I traded my '07 S with 30k miles for $49k a year ago! It's basically gone up in price! That's ridiculous.
