Tail of the Dragon vs Blue Ridge Parkway

I want to drive the Tail of the Dragon but have heard some people say that the Blue Ridge trail is better.

Have any of you done any of these amazing drives yet?

If so, do you have any suggestions.

On the Blueridge Parkway you can actually sight see and on the Tail you better be paying attention to the road for the 11 miles.

Could do both. All depends how much time I want to spend behind the wheel. They are not too far from each other, maybe I can take a long drive to Knoxville.

There are a few other routes right around the Tail of the Dragon that have some nice curves as well. Plus, they don't seem to be as heavily traveled.

IMO you can't go wrong anywhere down there! I just came back from down there last month and I WILL go back with just my bike next year. The Klingman's Dome drive from Gatlinburg was awesome, and the Blue Ridge from Knoxville to Asheville was very cool, too.

Off season, the Parkway is LESS congested. Glad I had my Radar/Laser detector!

The Dragon is not a fast road, it's a 'technical' road. Like the man said above, lots of Tennessee's finest who'd like for you to make a donation to the state tax fund. If you go, I'd highly recommend you go during the week. Best thing to do is leave from the NC side, drive the 11 miles to the other end taking it easy, and see how many po-po's there are along the route. When you turn around to come back, you can 'play'. Whatever you do, do not cross the centerline. If you do, you're likely to get nailed by an oncoming car, or by a m/c rider who's in too deep.

The BRP is a gorgeous road - from one end to the other. But it is heavily patrolled, and for the most part the speed limit is 35 - 45 in some places. Of course you can play, but be careful.

I go up there a couple times each year.. on two wheels. I'm going to take the Porsche up there eventually.

Another option is to make the quick drive up to Alton VA and hit VIR. No cops or traffic to worry about

The Blue Ridge is slow with ample time to look around. I wouldn't do it on the weekend. A lot of the Dragon is fun at the posted limit and I think you can bump it 10 without too much worry of a ticket. During the week is the most fun. Check out Moonshiner 28 for a nice ride. http://moonshiner28.com
