Buying a new clutch @ 24k miles - NOT happy!
Sorry in advance if this has been covered. I read through several posts and didn't see directly relevant information.
So, here's the deal - my 997.2 Targa 4S with 24k miles is at Rector Porsche having a new clutch installed and the flywheel either resurfaced or I'm buying a new flywheel as well. I bought the car from Rector almost two years ago as a CPO, with 12k miles on it.
To answer the obvious questions, i haven't tracked the car and in my 30 years of driving I have basically only ever driven cars with manual transmissions. I've had several 911s before this one, logging over 150k miles in them, and have never had to buy a clutch - in either the Porsches that i've owner or ANY other car that I've owned, for that matter. So, if I'm responsible for using up this clutch, it'd be a big surprise.
I'm going to replace everything with OEM parts, but the big question is what should I do about the very high service bill? If the original owner had abused the clutch, I'm assuming it didn't show up when they serviced the car before selling it again. Any other obvious explanations? I gather that the pressure plate is in good shape and has all of its teeth.
Do I just suck it up and foot the bill - knowing that the clutch is now good to go for tens of thousands of miles? Do I put up a big stink with the dealership? Do I get in touch with PCNA? Or?? Also, while it's apart, is there anything else that should be done? I'm guessing that they have to replace the RMS as part of the process, but is that right?
Thanks in advance!

yes, you don't know how the prior owner drove your car but if you are replacing a clutch at 24K, probably not too kind... My prior 996 had 160K on the original clutch and on my 997 I have 80K, original clutch. So there is a problem for sure. I also don't understand owners that replace the brakes at 30K miles...
Just foot the bill knowing that you are going to have a fresh start and enjoy your car...

i had to replace my clutch at around 30k miles because of a faulty throw out bearing. its a huge an expensive job. i went to an indy and it was around $3300 or so. how much is the dealer charging you?
Would assume the dealer would address anything that needs tending to while the tranny is removed. AOS is always mentioned with regards to the 997.1 as a wear item that is easier and cheaper to replace while the transmission is out. But, not sure if that advice still holds true on the 997.2. Shifter fork should be looked at given the premature clutch death. Always want to check the RMS as well.

I bought my car as a CPO as well and the clutch went out 5k miles later at 31K. I chalked it up to the PO and perhaps a little bit of learning the car on my part. That was 20k ago and no worries since. I panicked at first thinking I was doing something wrong and requested a ride-along from one of the local PCA instructors. We tooled around the back roads one afternoon and had coffee. He felt confident that, although I could be smoother, there was no way I burnt a clutch out in 5k and I should assume the PO did it.
If it s a CPO car wouldn t their be a dealer record of the clutch wear being checked while going thru the CPO process?? I know brakes are measured in this process to give you the brake life left.
Don t think the RMS is an issue for the 997.2 s.
I would certainly talk to the dealer about their CPO process and press them to offer some assistance.

I just checked my CPO paperwork and it only lists clutch play and gear change with a pass or fail indication. I would still have the conversation with the dealer and let them know you are now not a happy customer.

Thanks all.
Yeah - seems as though it's worth a conversation with the dealer, but I'm guessing it's just going to get chalked up to the price of buying a car without knowing the PO. Still a great car that I love driving, just not as huge a discount from new as before.
I think the total job is going to be around $3k, unless I need a new flywheel, in that case it'll be around $4k. Que lastima, but it is what it is.

Ditto on the CPO. Bought my CPO 997.1 with 39K miles on it. A few days after i bought it (11 months ago) I went back and told them that I felt that there was some vibration in 1st gear which I thought might be the throwout bearing. They drove it, said it was ok. 7,000 miles later the clutch went out. Service manager told me it was "premature" clutch wear due to it getting hot??? Anyway, $2000 later I have a new clutch and didn't want to take on a huge fight. I've been driving stick since age 16 and have taken high performance cars beyond 60K miles without clutch problems so it wasn't me.
At least I'm happy I have a new clutch which should last a looong time.

I had a similar experience with my 997.1 S. I bought private, out of warranty and got a good deal but knew there was risks not knowing how the PO drove the car. I bought at 24K, and was at the dealer at 25K getting a new clutch. It is unusual but it happens. Do you have any issues getting into 1st from a standstill?
