Porsche 997 Key, Love or Hate?
The Key,.....i spend all my time on all the Great things about my 997. Not sure when I'll get to the things that annoy me. That's like saying that scar on the back of my wifes left ear, Really Annoys me!
Or in my case, the top of my cab will open automatically if the button is pressed for more than 3 seconds (via SmarTop).

Just like Solidst8, I hold my key in my hand until I am safe distance away. Plus the porsche key chain looks nice in my hand.

Btw, Solidst8, our jeans are prob too tight
Not a fan at all. I imagine in the 70's it was a hi-tech key. Today, not so much. Fortunately, the company focus is on performance so the lagging tech features are just a cute 'quirk'.
It's seems we're 50/50 on this thread. And it really is either Love or Hate. I guess I'm not surprised. Like most, I much prefer BMW/Mercedes Key over the 997. The 991 key is much better. I "Patched" my key, so I don't have to hold it as if I'm praying before I get 50 feet away from the car to prevent a frunk opening.
I agree, I don't mind them lacking in key design as long as the car performs, but common Porsche, 100K car, and you give me this key. I was hoping someone would have come up with an alternative.

I created this thread because I was really curious as to the opinions of other 997 owners. I understand that some might think this thread is worthless. But I really wanted to gauge other members opinion and it seems I'm not too far off.
There is an update kit from Porsche which has a ridge over each button to prevent this - works really well and no more accidental pushes. Call the dealer.
The thing I hate the most is that if I drop it, the key typically flies apart and I have to re-assemble all the pieces and hope it will snap tightly (??) back together. Eventually the tabs wear and it gets to the point it hardly stays together without the help of some black tape around it. Then it looks really ghetto.
I don't give it much thought except when I accidentally pop the trunk or unlock the doors with it in my pocket.
It's not nearly as bad as the Cayman key though as the rear trunk button on the Cayman is raised pretty high and there were many times I'd come out to the car and the hatch would be open.
I do wish it would give me a more positive indication of the doors being locked or unlocked. A beep or honk would be fine.

Get a SmartTop device. You can program it for the key to have to be held down longer for the hood to open, and you can have an audible beep when locking the car.
