How true is oil changing because of time

I think and this is just my opinion that oil should last more than one year as some dealers say, I think that is a trick to pull money.

Off course If you have a car 10 years without starting the oil, will loose some of the properties, but If you drive your car every 15 days or more often and you do 6 miles on a year, again in my opinion the oil is in perfect condition and therefor you should not change the oil because a year lap pass!!

Do I make myself clear, my writing in English is bad.

what do you think?

If you let the oil sit for a long time it becomes saturated and loses it's coating ability. Think about vegetable oil, oil that sits for a very long time, you can visibly see a separation in molecules. Breaking up molecules decreases its effectiveness, basically leaving sludge at the bottom and water at the top.

Change your oil.

i think you should realize that the only thing protecting your $15,000 high-revving Porsche engine is mere 9 quarts of motor oil.

This is not the part u wanna try to save money on.

If u don't like giving ur money to the dealer, u can learn to change the oil yourself.

Its an easy DIY.

I think oil that 1 year old is fine, by the end of the two year mark I would change it no matter the miles. That s just my view after 30 plus years of motorsports.

Funny you should ask, in a sad kind of way. Up until a few months ago, I had a 2000 BMW 540i with less than 60,000 miles. M Sport package, great car. It was my wife's car and she drove it about 15-20 a week. At 5,000 miles between oil changes, that's almost 5 years. Great... Well, no, not so great: the oil filter deteriorated, to the point that it pretty much became an oil plug rather than a filter. Net result: no oil to the VANOS system, an engine that's pretty much a lost case, and now she drives a FIAT 500.

It's very important, or it's not. As Harry Callahan said "do you feel lucky punk...? Do you want to go against the factory recommendations and risk your car? I don't. I change mine per factory specs. It's not the dealer specs. They come from Porsche - and most if not all other car manufacturers. Mileage or time ... or neither. Your call.

All of you made your point and that is what I like to hear, I had my thoughts.

Breizh make me realized many other thing deteriorate rather than the oil!!

I don´t feel lucky and I do not want to go against the river current on this case.

Thanks again for for knowledge!!

In addition to peace of mind, that approach does one more thing: it enhances the chances of making a claim against a manufacturer, dealer or mechanic if something goes wrong. In this day an age and our litigious society, you need to make sure you have all your ducks in a row and your paperwork in order. Sad, but that's the way it is.

stealership prices for oil changes have been know to be anywhere from $250 upwards. i did an oil change for the first time ever on my '11 c4 a few days ago. real easy and after you do it once, you'll never go back to a dealership again for an oil change. very simple, and i'm not automotive mechanically inclined

That's odd. My dealership charges $148 and that's a great deal to me. Far better than having to spend time jacking, lifting, raising, shopping for the oil and filter, changing oil or or finding a place to legally dispose of the old oil afterwards. My time is easily worth $148.

Re: Annual Oil Change

I only put about 3-4k miles on my 997.2 C2S per year. I get it serviced annually, which includes an oil change. I consider it a small price to pay (relatively speaking) for some peace of mind.

But I have a related question. My dealer stores my car for about 4 months during the winter. Do you think it makes sense to perform my annual oil change/service:
1) right before going into winter storage
2) as the car comes out from storage in the spring
3) does not matter

Thanks!

It's best to change the oil and filter prior to storing. That way the contaminants, some of which are acidic, do not set in the engine for the four months it is in storage.
