Moving from Texas to So Cal....Struggling with what to do with my baby.

Hi guys, I would like some advice on our upcoming adventure. After 25 years my wife and I are finally in a position to move back home to So Cal. Before this turns into a "California sucks" thread let me just say that So Cal is home. It always has been home and my wife and I simply can not stand one more Texas summer, the humidity or dodging hurricanes.

So with that out of the way, what to do with my car? I love my 911 but where we are moving there is no Porsche dealership within an hour drive. I am also a little concerned about registration, insurance costs and most importantly....Safety of my car. I read all the time about vandalism or out and out theft of nice cars and I am VERY protective of my car. It's why it's in such good shape with only 8k miles. So how do you guys in bigger cities handle the stress of it? If I decide I can't reconcile this I will most likely sell her before we leave Texas.

I appreciate any input.

Find an independent shop and keep it. You'll probably appreciate it more in So. Cal.

Stop putting the car on a pedestal and drive it! Seems like you're spending too much time worrying about it vs. enjoying it.

Never understood why people take their cars to dealer except for warranty work.

You're moving to SoCal ...not Afghanistan. You'll be able to care for the car and keep it safe.

And I bet there are more Porsche's registered in California than most other states (and probably many countries)...so those owner's have reconciled their worries.

I always considered SoCal the Porsche Mecca. That's probably one of the best places to have one. True, California is expensive but I'm sure you know that being originally from there in the first place. Keep the insurance up to date and don't worry about it. If some random Texas redneck didn't vandalize you car then you'll be fine in Cali.

I use my GT3 RS at least 3 days a week (in hollywood) no problems. Enjoy the car, you will find an independent shop locally or call a flat bed for dealer work if you're busy.

My 2011 cost are as follows:
Yearly registration, right at $ 780.00
Insurance @ $1050 ( per year)
Fuel out here is around $ 4.40 per gallon
Got a buddy that lives two hours out of Reno with a 2010 Turbo, he has no issues with a dealer being so far away.
I would rather own a Porsche in California rather than Texas due to climate.
What part of California are you relocating to ?

What city / town will you be moving to? Southern California is a large place. You'll find that these cars grown on trees here in the more affluent areas. They're a dime a dozen.

where are u moving to? Watts in south central LA ??

but then again, there is a 3-4 Porsche dealerships within 30 mins from there.. so i guess not.

Why are u so afraid to bring ur Pcar to SoCal ? Our cars are dime-a-dozen here.. and as long as u use some common sense, ur car should be just fine.

BTW I also find it funny that u r concerned about the safety of ur car.. yet not mention the safety of ur wife. Perhaps u should leave ur wife in Tx and get a new one here, too..

I kid, of course.

They still use the word "Watts"? I thought people stopped after they cancelled Sanford & Son.

How can you be moving to a big city in So Cal and be over an hour from a dealer? You must be moving to a smaller town and even then, you should be able to access service fairly easily. I would have zero worries about having a Porsche in So Cal. I'm on my 4th one here.

My suggestion is to make your life choices with your wife, not the internet club. What you're asking about is a car not a "baby". You may want to ask yourself why you would move from a location where you are safe and secure and moving to an area where you are worried about the safety of your car. I don't believe you will have any trouble finding an independent Porsche mechanic in southern California. Again, family decisions need to be made in the family.

not really sure what your concern is. where are you moving to in so cal? we have a ton of porsches here and nobody else seems to be overly concerned over safety. are you moving to compton or something? sounds like the hurricanes you are dodging would suck more than anything here.

anyway i'm loving my 911 cabrio here in socal, use it as my daily driver, and have never once thought about vandalism or the 'stress' of living in a big city.

If you can afford a 911, you should be able to afford to live in the "nicer/safer" areas of So Cal....
