quietest tires
Hey everybody.
I have just had a new set of wheels delivered and need to buy a new set of tires for them.
any opinions on what to get?
Im looking for low road noises and comfort over all out performance.

All tires start out quiet and then start getting louder. What matters is how fast they degrade/get louder. For me bad experience with Pirellis and good experience with MPSS (so far). I expect my MPSS to get louder as the miles add up but they seem to be holding up much better than the Pirellis did.
Agreed that the Michelin Pilot Sports (any variant) have always done best overall for me. I don't ever add "for the money" because that doesn't change the answer. Overall, the Michelin's seem to be the best.
I suspect any low profile performance tire is going to be noisy. Especially on concrete or anti aqua plane surfaces. Based on what I've read Michelin Pilot Sport or Super Sports might be the best bet.
You can't beat the Michelin Pilot Super Sport for price, noise, dry/wet grip, wear and price (price is so good it's worth a double mention!). In fact, a set costs less than the Conti 5P mentioned above. Tirerack shows those Contis as close outs.

What size wheels do you have? Swapped my pirelli pzero with hankook evo V12s - while there was definitely a noticeable difference in ride (much softer now, not as 'sharp' when cornering), probably only a slight reduction in road noise. There is still a very audible 'hum' and that factors in that its a brand new set of hankooks!!!
I HATED the pirellis - and I was also under the impression that the hankooks are some of the quietest tires you can buy. I had a great experience with the hankooks on my BMWs but they did fall short of my expectations when mounted on the 19s I have on now. I guess the 295s sitting on the back will roar no matter the tire brand pretty much on our cars.

I feel where the pzeros WOULD shine is on the track or on a windy road. And the tires are pricey to boot. Given that most of my commutes involve straight roads with all speed limits 45mph+ , the pzeros were not the best suited for 'my style' of daily driving. The ride quality improved significantly on the hankooks aside from making a turn where they do feel 'mushier' - but I would say the noise improvement was only about 25% over the pzeros around town, slightly better improvement at higher speeds where the Pzeros were unbearable. I now just attribute a lot of the noise to the width and low profile of the tires in general.
Ive heard a lot of positives regarding super sports - but went with the hankooks due to a slightly cheaper price tag and a great experience on my previous cars with them.

I made the same move from 20" Pirelli PZeros to the same Hankook Ventus V12s on a Jaguar XK I used to own. Night and day difference. I'm sure others have had a positive experience, but I thought the Pirellis were garbage. LOUD, hard, and dangerous in wet weather (I bought the car with only 10K miles with the Pirellis as OEM tires). They were so bad that I got rid of them at 12K when there was still plenty of tread on them. The Hankooks were super quiet, handled well, much better in the rain, and dirt cheap.

I dont think its the tires that should be quiet. That size wheel and tire generate alot of noise. As they get worn they generate more. And they wear fast. So buy a set you like and you will replace them often, and they will be quiet for a while again
Well today I was at irwindale dragstrip for a hotVWs event.
and one of the sponsors had a 997 there with turbo rims on it.
I looked at them from every angle and was undecided.
so I went back to my car and moved it to the sponsors area
so I could do a real comparison with the two cars ....
Thanks for all the help but i don't need tires anymore.
Im going to keep my wheels and sell the turbos I got on friday
