Looks awesome Joel. The only negative for me would be the volume. I see you use a different interface to play music, looks cool, but to raise and lower the volume seems a bit difficult especially while driving...so a volume **** or even a remote would be nice. Don't know if Apple has anything or even aftermarket has anything to connect via Bluetooth and control the volume.

I have seen other iPad mini installs via uTube, nice ones at that. Most I've seen are Cayenne's not Carrera's. I noticed most of those installs used a separate controller for volume. I saw some of the installs where they have a motorized housing to allow the iPad to be removed. Real trick, but it was in a SUV, which has obvious more room to play with.

Overall with this install being that you did this on your own...props brother...excellent. Get that parts list out please as I want to get that list to my stereo installer and price it out for my car. Already got the ok from the better half to get it done. She is as tired as I am with the NavTV set up I have.

Thanks Joel.

thanks for the kind words!

the equalizer I'm using is called EQu.
true, volume control becomes an issue. there are man apps for volume control that are just a huge **** on the screen.... I haven't found a pretty one. for now, I use the EQu app and drop the equalization bar all the way to the bottom. you can do that without even looking.
I will put together the list, but the most fabrication comes from the bezel. everything else is plug and play.

ok, I gathered all the parts and web links for it...

GT3/GT2RS Radio Elimination Shelf:
http://www.suncoastparts.com/product...367100A05.html

This is what you will modify the most to fit the iPad... pretty much, remove all the shelf part and keep the bezel.

You buy this chinese dock and take it apart. All you need is the right angle lightning cable that will plug to the ipad. The USB to lightning cable will plug to this.

I don't have any pictures, but this is pretty much what you need to do:

Remove carpeted ends on the front of the rear main console (or dash)

Remove two screws (on each) to remove the 2 side bolsters for the center dash

Remove one silver screw on the pass side on the PCM

Unlock the cam locks on the side of the PCM

Pull the PCM out and unplug the AM antenna, FM antenna, Fiber Optic and double box plugs.

Prepare the Radio Adapter loom with this connection sequence:

From first plug: (from the car)
rear:
purple: rear right +
purple/black: rear right -

green: rear left +
green black: rear left -

front:
white: rear right +
white/black: rear right -

gray: rear left +
gray black: rear left -

From second plug: (from the car)

black: ground
yellow: switched power
blue/white: amp control. you need to have this connected to switched power for the door speakers to work.

Get the switched power from fuse slot C6 and run it from the fuse box to behind the PCM. Euromotorsports provide you with this long cable.

Connect your loom adapter's cables to the pre amp.

Depending on how do you want it to control your music/volume, you will use the dock adapter to a USB friendly Pre-Amp (iStreamer) or any other device that supports it, or use the 3.5mm headphone plug for audio out to the pre-amp. You could also use the bluetooth streaming connection using the belkin part. then connect the belkin to the pre-amp.

hook everything up and test.
if everything is ok, you now proceed to install the iPad.

The iPad fits against the center dash frame, no need to modify this. you will only need to take out a little rectangular area from your passenger side dash's bolster in order for the right angle to go in. The iPad is literally held in place by the pressure of the two panels. trust me. it won't move.

Now, the bezel:

Once you got your hands on the Radio Elimination kit you will cut the whole shelf part and leave the bezel only. It's pretty much 1/4" what you are going to be using but cut a little bit more because you will need to flat sand the bezel part so it will fit flush against the iPad's screen.
To keep the bezel from falling, you will place two magnets that will align with the iPad's magnets created for the smart cover.
Now, for the home button activation:
You could do a multi gesture command to get to the home page but I discovered a new way without messing up the bezel finish by drilling a hole:
I placed a rubber nub which is barely 1mm deeper than the bezel. This now rests on top of the recessed home button, so the bezel sits flush and with the most sensitive push on the bezel's area where the home button is underneath, you can go back to the home screen. works like a charm (as seen on the video)

shortcomings:

You lose 3 pixels at the top of the iPad's screen.
Volume control is a little cumbersome unless you use a dedicated app to control it
You are better getting the 4G version and scrap the 4G hotspot
You can remove the iPad but it will take the removal of one of the side panels.
The bezel covers the front facing camera, but the bezel can be removed in 1 second, thanks to the use of magnets.

How about a Bluetooth volume and station controller? Nice job BTW. You are prototyping the 991.2 methinks... Sort of like agile development, yes?!

Joel,

In the video you posted, how does the device just "turn on" when the ignition starts, without you having to tap the bezel (to indirectly press the Home button)?

Also, is it possible to disable the slide to "unlock" feature on the iPad? It would be cool if it just goes to your "home" page with the cool background as soon as you start your car.

yes, the second you turn your key, the iPad is awaken. No need to tap the bezel. At this point, unless I jailbreak, I'm not able to bypass the slide to unlock. I can change the lock screen image with the same home image to make the transition more transparent.

This install is on a 997.1. but some other cars should be pretty similar, like 997.2 and cayman/boxsters.

.
Joel, the evasi0n jailbreak for the mini and IOS 6.1 was just released yesterday... I applied it to my iPad mini, and combined with the Cydia Activator application, I can now bypass the lock screen.

Mine is new set up with a just few additional features through Activator, all customizable:
  • External power connected while sleeping/locked => Automatically unlock (no swipe) and return to last active application.
  • External power disconnected while at home page or in application => Automatically lock.
  • Hold home button down (long press) on lock screen => Force a full power reset.

You can also program swipe gestures for volume up and down, and even have it auto-launch into a specific application on every unlock. I'm thinking I might set it up this way with PodCar (thanks for the reference to that program, by the way!) I can also bypass Apple's very restrictive bluetooth protocols and connect to an inexpensive bluetooth OBD2 dongle.

I'm not a huge jailbreak fan, but for custom installed iPad's in vehicles, it definitely 'fixes' a few limitations. IMHO, it gives the iPad integration a much more OEM feel. Turn the key on, the iPad goes live. Turn the key off, it shuts down, just like a factory system.
