Move from a 997S to a Spyder??

Move to a Spyder?
Need help making a decision. I have what I think is a pretty special 997S modified just right. I have a real sweet spot however for a Boxster Spyder and found one at the local dealer equipped as I would have ordered it. Its Basalt Black (like my current 997S) with 6-spd manual trans, nav, sport exhaust, sport shifter, sport seats, alcantara interior. It is a 2011 with 11,300 mi. Asking price I think is a little high - 69,880 - but have not sat down to negotiate. I don't know what my car is worth but obviously I'd have to come up with a good bit of $$ to get into the Spyder. Do you think after the honeymoon period is over I'd feel that I took a step down going from a 997S to a Boxster?

I would appreciate your thoughts.

Thanks!

Tough choice...for the most part, I see the 997 > 987, but the Spyder is something special. I drove a couple of Spyders and really enjoyed them.

If you had a 997.2 I'd tell you to stick with the 911 given the DFI and other 'enhancements'. I also see the 911 as the car with most of the Porsche history behind it, but the Boxster does have it's own strong lineage.

I guess one question you need to ask yourself is: what additional mods will you make to the Spyder to get it where you want it to be? Do you mind spending for those mods?

It looks like the 997 isn't a DD, so the Spyder wouldn't need to be either.

Again...if it were a .2 then I'd say stick with it...but being a .1 I might just lean towards the Spyder and enjoy as much time as I could with the top down.

Not a tough choice as I see it - but one that YOU have to make. I've owned both and they are completely different, unique and great cars. Interior space have a very different feel. If you haven't driven the Spyder that would need to be done before any decision. Once you've done that, the question should answer itself. Yes or no - your choice.

Spyder is cool, but the 981S is the better choice and prices compare.

Thanks for the replies. I'm going to hopefully drive the Spyder tomorrow and see how I feel after that. I like the 981S...definitely more practical...may drive that too.

Anyone else have any thoughts?

Bokchoys is infamous around these parts
The 981S is a beautiful car. putting the spyder side by side against the a new 981 S... I'd go with the 981 just on looks alone.

my new 981S definitely drives different than my 997.2, but it's sweet nonetheless. IMO, 2 very different choices.

Someone in our local PCA had a Spyder, and it turned out to be a fair weather car. The top was a PITA to put up, and you can't drive more than 75MPH or so (according to him) with the top up because of buffeting. If your choice is the Spyder or the 981S, I'd go for the 981S or keep the 997.

Before you pull the trigger on the Spyder, put the top up, drive it at speed, and then take it down and see if you can live with that.

Thanks. I drove the Spyder and had a blast - great handling - feels so connected to the road. I love the look of the car. I drove a short distance with the top on and it was noisy but not bothersome though I did not get over 50mp. Not a daily driver top. Good power but not on par with what I have. As much as I love the Spyder I'm leaning towards keeping my car...need to sleep on it.
