Newbie from Singapore

Hey all,
I'm really happy to have stumbled across this great site. Thanks in advance.

I'm an Australian residing in Singapore and have just purchased my first Porsche. A beautiful MY2007 Targa 4S Tiptronic in White with Black interior. Very happy and excited as I've always wanted a 911 (who can honestly say they didn't). Targa wasn't by 1st choice but this car was too new to knock back and the versatility is quite surprising!

My car is an original Singapore delivery (there are only 3 Targa 997s here actually) with only 10,000kms on the clock. The original owner has 11 other cars all in white including an Aston, Bentley, Mclaren, Ferrari amongst others!

The car is all original with full books and every conceivable option except navigation (given I'm taking it back to Australia in a couple of years it's not a big issue for now). If I said to you that the car looks BRAND NEW....I'm not kidding.

Am really keen to draw from the breadth of experience here and hope to be able to glean some help and advice soon as there are a couple of little items that need attention.

David

Welcome David!

It's great to see another Targa owner! You will love the top! Its great to drive during the day, so panoramic! It's fun to drive at night with the city lights in the car, so elegant! And it's really terrific driving it, of all times, in the rain! It's really awesome to have the rain coming down on the glass top, while being warm and dry in the car as the all wheel drive grabs the road!

Very little special attention is needed for the top. I clean the runners with a Q-Tip and lubricating oil twice a year (10 minutes). The runners will collect junk causing the roof to open and close slowly. I've been using a lubrication oil, but others use silicone. I plan on trying silicone next. There is another targa owner in my local PCA club with an older targa who uses silicone and is happy with it. Here is a very good thread on cleaning the runners: targa roof squeak suggestions

Another targa owner,Bill (brwiedman), from Canada recommends cleaning the roof cables periodically. Bill sent me some photos of the process yesterday and next week, I plan on giving it a try and posting a DIY thread on the process. Here is Bill's thread: lubricating the Targa cables

I'm also having a VF supercharger installed in mine in a couple weeks. I tried the TPC Supercharger this spring, but it wouldn't fit in the targa engine compartment. I thought long and hard about getting a turbo, but did not want to lose the glass top for a turbo cabriolet or coupe. I'll post on it as the install begins.

Again welcome!

Don

Thanks Don.

There is actually one issue with the car that I'm hoping to get some help with?

When the roof is opened the wind deflector "pops up" via a what looks to be spring loaded arms on either side. I have a problem that the left side is not springing up and therefore wont hold the deflector up.

Has this been seen before as an issue? would appreciate any pointers

Congrats on the purchase sounds like you found an amazing Targa As for the wind deflector, I haven't seen any specific parts you can by individually, it looks like they only offer the Wind Deflector Repair Kit that includes a whole new assembly. Hopefully this helps and look forward to some pictures when you take them.

David,

I have not seen that. Hopefully it is an easy fix. I have bought some parts from Peter Chua in Singapore. I will have to forward you his email in a private message. He said his mechanic is amazing. He's a great guy too.

David:

Welcome to the (happy) addiction of Porsche ownership. Enjoy!

One question that comes to mind. I've been to Singapore frequently and I love it, however, it is (pardon me) somewhat regimented and I've always been impressed how most keep faithfully to very low speed limits? So...what do you do when you want to unleash those 345 ponies?

Hi Jasper. You're correct, Singapore is a small island with lots of rules. Driving "spiritedly" is an issue for us car-lovers (I just got another speed camera fine 2 days ago for 39kmh over the limit).

It's just something we deal with, there are plenty of high-end cars to admire. They are VERY expensive though. If I was to share with you the price of my 5 year old car you would die!

Good reason to have a Tiptronic.

Sepang Circuit up near Kaula Lumpur is not too far away (180 miles).

Good point - the cost of my 2006 997.1 C4S in Singapore is about 500% (five hundred%) of what you would pay in the USA for the same car.

Welcome to the forum. Your wind deflector issue may simply be due to the end metal piece sliding out of its track. I would take a close look at how the right side slides as it pops up vs. the left side.

Replacing the deflector is a major job and involves removal of the headliner and sunroof. Also, the wind deflector is roughly $175 at suncoast, and coincidentally I have one laying around should you go that route.

My goodness! Why? Is it tax? I'll sell you one for plus 1/10th of that uptick!
