Radar Detector Install

How can I hardwire my radar detector? I want to use a cord like the one in the photo. This will be for an Escort. I am not good with electrical stuff so please be specific. Thanks!

you can either wire it to the battery or tap into an existing power/ground cable. where do you want to install the radar detector?

I want to install it directly under the rear view mirror.

you just need to tap the power, ground and ignition from the courtesy dome light right above the rear view mirror. I did that when I installed an autodim rear view mirror..

Best way to install...tap in to the fuse box on the driver size, run the wire up the A pillar, there's enuff room to stuff the wire between the windshield and headliner

Best way to install if you aren't technical? - take it in to a specialist for a professional job.

^^^ very easy and no need to uninstall anything. There's a thread for DIY.

Like others have mentioned you can use a fuse tap to provide power to the radar detector. I think AutoZone carries one that looks similar to this:

Run the wire up from the fuse box to your desired location. A nice trick to make it stay snug is to put knots in the cable at different points. This will ensure that when you push it up under the headliner it won't rattle or fall down.

I just had mine professionally installed by tapping into the rear view mirror wires. They had to mount the unit right under the mirror because above it looked off. Let me know if you have any questions.

If you're not a good DIY'r (especially electrical) bring it to 'pro' or have a competent buddy do it for you. It's a relatively simply mod for any 'hands-on' Porsche owner.

I did my V1 a few years back and tapped into the lighting console (above the rear view mirror) for a 'switched' +12 line. There is a great set of instructions either on this forum or Rennlist.com. Do a search and you'll discover plenty of info.

Very good step-by-step directions on how to do it at this link. I followed these instructions, took me less than 30 minutes and works great. It taps from dome light so radar detector can be installed right next to rear view mirror.
