IMS? Urgent. Pics inside.
It still really bothers me than Porsche doesn't admit that there is a design defect in that motor. All of these cars should've been voluntarily recalled and fixed. If they din't want to do that, they should offer free labor on the fix. Very disappointed in them.
You're looking at the piston's head and the cylinder wall, pic taken thru the spark plug hole.
What was your indy assessment? Are those normal scratch marks?
Is your car back on the road?

Sorry for the lack of information. Holden is right pictures were taken with camera inside the cylinder.
The opinion of the guy that did the pictures is that we should go for a new engine. Indy is arriving today to take a look at the pics.
The way I was told is that there is no way we should attempt to fix the engine.
I'm semi-retarded when it comes to mechanical stuff so I posted pics here both for your opinions while I'm waiting for indy) and future reference to those suffering from IMS failure.

I'll ask tomorrow morning.
This took so long that they sold the engine I found two weeks ago. I called around today and between 5 people they only managed to find 1 engine currently available in europe
But it's from a loaner car and that's a big NO for me.

In pics 1 and 2, did he say that those are metal flakes, ball bearings, or what? Sorry for the inquiries, but I am somewhat of a engine-rebuilder-geek and I am always curious about engine internals.
Honestly I didnt ask. I was so annoyed that I need to shop for a new engine that it didn't cross my mind. I'll stop by tomorrow and get all the information. I'll let you know.
It's not ball bearing since we found all the pieces when we took the IMS.

I agree with Cab83, a compression test could reveal a number of things such as worn rings, cracked engine block... In your case you need to inspect for any damages to the piston head and broken/bent valves. A failed IMS could cause the timing chain to skip and thus cause this type of damage. As I wrote in an early post, when you started the engine and it ran perfectly at idle tells me your timing chains did not skip a gear, therefore your valves were not damaged against the piston heads.
To be on a safe side, have your indy do a compression test and check the condition of pistons and valves.

As of today my baby is back on the road. (Parked actualy due to heavy snow
)
We installed a great '06 engine with 16k miles. We also upgraded IMS, RMS and changed expansion tank and clutch (it had a few 1000 miles left) to minimize future downtime.
The old engine... We'll see if it is fixable to sell it in the future or have it on stock for any future use.
I'm sorry but I have no new information on the condition of the engine. I decided to go with a "new" engine after seeing internal damage that could result in huge downtime.

Glad you back on the road. Sorry you had the issues. I got a new engine in 09 and have had no issues since.
All the best for many miles of fun

Quick question...Did you have to split the case to install the new IMS nearing? Or was this an early build 06 engine?

How did you source out the engine?
