vf supercharger vs. tpcracing turbo
My aunt and uncle live along the fraiser river just before the bridge to head to richmond. We will be coming there this summer and I defenetly would love to meet up. We will keep in touch!
To the OP: you never got an answer to your original question other than 'don't do it'.
I respectfully disagree. Getting out of your C4s and into a TT of the same year will cost quite a bit more than the incremental cost of forced air induction.
I looked at the available options for my '06 C2S and went with an aftermarket turbo kit ( I went with Vivid but TCP is close enough to being the same thing).
I could not be happier. It transformed the car completely and gave me the rush I remembered from my days in a modded 996TT. And all for approx. $13K out the door.
And zero issues since. This car is my daily driver (45 miles a day every day).
So you mileage may vary, but I felt the need to offer you a different view from the ' if Porsche intended the C4S to have 500hp, they would have built it that way' worldview. If you go for the more basic mods ( intake, headers, exhaust), you'll spend 65% of the cost of the turbo kit for 10% of the performance gain.
To each his own.

If you are thinking of forced induction......save your money on all other mods!
TPC turbo comes with headers, mufflers and cats and both (TPC and VF) systems you are thinking about will delete the cold air intake!
IMO....if you want huge power gains you buy a factory turbo and mod that BUT if you are just looking to increase your power with the existing car.....there is no better bang for the buck than a forced induction system!
Cheers and GL,
Stacy

Think carefully about what you want out of your car. Is it your day driver? Do you like being able to just drop it off at the dealer/shop and assume they'll be able to fix it? Are you capable and equipped to do some serious wrenching on your own car?
My last car was a very hotrodded Honda S2000 with a supercharger. I never once had a real problem mechanically with it, but every time there was a noise or any funny behavior, I was on my own to figure out what to do. None of the local shops would touch it beyond normal repairs, and there are a lot of tuner shops near me. One time the aftermarket fuel pump started making a very loud noise after a long drive (turns out it's normal behavior when it gets pretty hot) and I was in the middle of nowhere afraid my car was on the brink of breaking down. Knowing that no Honda dealer would be able to help in the least, I thought I was going to need a very long tow and a rental car for a couple of weeks. It's an unsettling feeling.
Despite never having any problems with the car, the constant worry that if something arose I'd be SOL is part of what drove me to get a car that satisfied my go-fast wants out of the box.
Also, isn't Moose Jaw like 50k people? I'm originally from Calgary (1.1M) and I can't even think of a specialty shop equipped to deal with a FI'd 997 there.
IMHO only worth considering if you are prepared to fix any potential issues yourself, and if you have another practical car in case the Porsche is out of commission for a while (I'm going to guess you do anyways, judging by typical SK winters).

Don't overlook FI
Well I agree with Stacy, pvanosta and others that FI is a reasonable alternative. I looked at the 997.1 turbo option and it was another $50k+ over the value of my '06 997.1 C4. For about 20% of that I got a TPC turbo and haven't regretted it in the 3 years since it was installed. Air intakes, Plenums and several of the minor performance add ons are much more expensive for a given horsepower increase, but for many are a good choice for a lower cost investment.
I acknowledge that something very wrong and expensive could happen as you are putting more stress on the engine. But yet with these open forums you just don't run across engine failures due to the turbo or supercharger. The manufacturers are offering pretty low boost rates which reduces the chance of disaster.
The thing I worry about the most is speeding tickets because the car is so darn fast compared to stock! But considering the huge grin I get when I drive the car it's worth it.

Thanks all for comments. Im loving reading all this. Im trying to find a forum or comment somewhere with someone putting a turbo on that went wrong. Ive been looking at the gains you get putting a turbo on and just seems like you gain so much for for your buck. But I guess it all comes down to if your comfortable doing it!! Im not sure if I am yet haha! So does anyone have a suggestion whats a better turbo tpc or vivid?
Looking for someone who had an install failure isn't going to be meaningful because the sample size is so small. We all know that there is some (small) risk of IMS/RMS failures on our cars, but it's rare enough that we risk it. And the sample size there is 100% of 996s/997.1s sold. If any turbo kit carried a similar "massive failure" risk factor, odds are you still would never hear about it just because there aren't enough owners.
There was one user on Planet-9 who had a catastrophic failure of his engine with a TPC Racing Turbo, but I don't recall the details.
A broad generalization would be that turbos make more power (and if well designed, from a lower RPM) than superchargers, but superchargers will give you better throttle response and will drive more like stock.
Where would you even get a turbo or SC installed on a Porsche in Moose Jaw? I would be surprised if there were a specialist shop who could handle this kind of thing in the entire province. Don't take this the wrong way, but where do you even get routine maintenance done in MJ? Sorry to poop all over your parade, but having done the whole "mod your car to death" thing I want to make sure you understand the implications with owning such a vehicle.
Putting FI on a NA car like this is a bit like getting a pet tiger. It's awesome, but if you're not equipped to handle it yourself, and/or if you don't have a specialist to help you with it, it's going to rip your face off.
